Hi, i've acquired an old frame - which has seen some serious abuse/neglect. i want to take the paint off it, but don't know where to start. Is it really just a case of a wire brush and elbow grease? Or is there certain things i need to take into account?
I don't want to spend any money on the frame as it's just goin' to be my hack/ pub etc.
Any ideas? Cheers 🙂
Hardcore nitromors with DCM and methanol will loosen it.
A wire brush by itself will take you a great deal of time.
If its just a pub bike, it may be work just roughing up the existing surface and re-coating straight on top of that.
for the cost of Nitromors and the time taken, I'd either leave it as it is or take it for a blast and powder coat.
A guy I ride with stripped his Soul by painting it with car brake fluid and then sealing it in a binbag for a few days. Paint just fell off when he removed it. I have no idea if that might be dangerous in some way, but it looked very nice when it finally came back from the powder-coaters.
Podge is right.
Ultimately, if you have plenty of time on your hands, the Nitromors and time invested will be cheapest, but not by much, and it will take alot more time than handing it to a man with the tools, materials and equipment to do it for you.
Wire brush attachment on a drill.............or is that too hardcore? 😕
Should work, but it still won't be as easy as you think it might be.
If you are willing to spend £5-10 on NitroMors - It'll take you 30-45 minutes.
Everything else you need can be found under the sink!
You'll need:
Open/outdoors space to work in.
THICK rubber glove or TWO PAIRS of washing up gloves on.
Something for your eyes - Sunglasses/specs will suffice.
Old paint brushes.
Access to water/hose etc to take the NiroMors off (It's a fairly thick gel)
Brillo/Scourer/Wirewool etc to get in nooks & crannies.
I lie the frame on its side and slap the stripper on, leave it a while n scrub/hose off.
Simples.
Thanks for the replies-i'm goin to look into that nitromors idea. Seems like a load less hassle.
Scienceofficer - Podge is right.
can I frame that?
