Having recently commented on how much my wife spent on a night out, I stupidly carried on digging the hole by mentioning the cost of the hair cut/nails that she had before going out. During the discussion that followed it transpired that I waste far more money on push bikes. So I've worked out through strava that I spent roughly £10 an hour or £1 a mile last year. How does this compare to going to cinama or out for dinner etc? Do you think I should just drop it or use these stats to joyously win the argument?
You will never win. Either learn to accept it, or get a divorce. Which you also won't win.
So I've worked out through strava that I spent roughly £10 an hour or £1 a mile last year
That sounds like a lot. So much so that I am definitely going to avoid making the same calculation just in case I am spending a similar amount!! 🙂
Ps is that £10/hour include fettling time? Because that is definitely part of cycling too....
I spend far more time fettling than actually riding, there's nothing I enjoy more than an afternoon in me shed. I ain't great at maths so just to check, I done 2100 miles in 215 hrs over 150 rides. Does that sound right? I've lost me bottle now anyway but I am interested how this compares to others.
quick guess maths
4.50/Hour or 30p/km
Forget to mention I spent roughly £1500 tops last year.
There are simple ways to sort this out either spend less or ride more or get better at the second bank account
Road miles are cheaper obviously (you do more per mile and stuff wears out much slower and washing your kit does not go through so many washing machines) but I tend to ride out of the door. MTB is often a drive away so the door to door time is longer. But then that includes travel expenses so is a route not to be ventured in any cost related household budget conversation.
My usual comeback is that if I didn't do it I'd be heading for a heart attack which would do the household finances no good at all. Unless I died and she got the insurance payout. Thinking bout it I'm not convinced that might not be seen as a positive so I need a new angle.
Don't forget:
"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
...You just need a good spreadsheet...
Ps is that £10/hour include fettling time? Because that is definitely part of cycling too....
I think it would be a more fruitful exercise to factor in the time spent on the bog posting on STW

win the argument
Keep dreaming 😉
Below is a list of ways to win an argument with a woman
End of list.
Forget to mention I spent roughly £1500 tops last year.
Isn't that 71p a mile then?
(£1,500 / 2100 miles = £0.714 pounds per mile)
and
£6.98 per hour
(£1,500 / 215 hours = £6.976 per hour)
If I've got that right then things are looking up in the value for money stakes. 😀
£1/mile?
You'd be better off driving that 28 miles a week.
Ahh, but did you commute?
Do that and you get to claim back the 20p/mile you would have spent on petrol, tyres etc. So as long as you don't do something silly like spend a disproportionate amount on a bike just for commuting, you're potentially still in profit.
The killer for me when I did the maths was I worked out that riding was pretty cheap in parts once I'd gone singlespeed and invested in decent hubs etc. But was costing a fortune in petrol (10miles each way, 2x a week, that's £2k a year!).
I'm heading off to do an event in the arctic - if I were to add-up the cost of my bike, equipment, flights and hotels it'll easily come to £5k and I have 5 days to do the event, that's a bit more that £40/hour - absolute bargain 😀
Nota spoon. No I don't commute but the bike I ride the most is SS and I can't remember even changing the chain last year. It's all the other essentials like the forks with tapered steerer to replace the forks that didn't.. The bars 20 mm wider, cus that's gonna make all difference.. 10 mm longer stem.. 10 mm shorter stem.. Etc etc
[quote=keppdog ] use these stats to joyously win the argument?
Yes do that......please report back how life is in the bedsit
I tried to [s]argue[/s] discuss the cost of lip gloss per/litre that mrsb was buying never again will I make that mistake
£3500 spent last year which roughly equates to £1 per mile.
Bargain
If you got a geared bike you'd probably cover more miles and therefore it'd cost less per mile 🙂
