Getting annoyed with this now.

Ages ago I noticed a bit of play in the front end of the bike, I thought it was headset related as you could feel it if you turned the bars to be parallel to the frame and then 'lifted' the bar from the end of the handlebar nearest the saddle, as well as being able to feel play when holding the front brake on and rocking the bike back and forth. However you couldnt feel exactly where the play was using your fingers.

Still , I felt like buying an angleset and so this was a good excuse to do so.

Fast forward to now, the entire new headset is fitted , but the play is still there.

so I think I have eliminated all of the following as causes of play, but the play is still present so what is it most likely to be caused by?

- play in fork bushings - eliminated because I cant feel play between fork lower and stantion
- Play where steerer tube meets fork crown - eliminated because I cant feel any play between steerer and crown
- Play in headset - eliminated because I have a new headset, and I cant feel any play between any of the components.
- ovalised headtube - eliminated because I cant feel play between headset cups and headtube itself. Also frame is carbon - can you ovalise a carbon frame?
- play in brakes - because the play is apparent even when the brakes are not on , I have physically removed the brakes just to be sure.
- Play between stem and steerer - eliminated because I cant feel play between the two
- Play between stem and handlebars - eliminated because I cant feel play between the two.

ideas??

Is it a full sus? You could be looking at completely the wrong end of the bike...

yes full suss, its an ibis mojo HD.

I have had a poke around the back end and everything seems tight there,no obvious play, but my focus has been on the front, so its probably worthy of a more detailed inspection.

What sort of test could I do to remove the back end from the equation , or to narrow it down to a problem with the back end.

rear bushes on the rear shock ! i had the same problem, could have sworn it was coming from the front. turned out one of the bushes had gone. 10 minute job to replace and it sorted it.

Get someone else to "knock" it for you while you listen. Best diagnostic tool there is, way better than eyes.
