[#9331164]

getting a bit more steep and jumpy in my old age - must be a mid life crisis and my spd's are becoming a liability

I don't like heavy and don't have the spare funds to go for titanium anymore (currently running crank bros candy 4ti) especially as i'll need new shooz as well

looking at cheap flats it seems you can spend around 50 quid and get heavy 500g alloy or £27 and get plastic (nukeproof evo) 350g

Are they flexy as hell or OK?

I've got Nukeproofs and they're fantastic. Dirt cheap, light as a feather and they seem to take the knocks fine. Decent bearings too. Had them over a year and ridden through a Yorkshire winter, on P7 hardtail too, so they're getting some proper hammer. Posh pedals are a waste of money if you ask me.

I like my Electrons. Cheap, light and strong, really grippy and been reliable, in that Ive never so much as touched them in three years and they still spin well. Im 100kg and ride pretty heavy too and never noticed them flexing either.

Oh yeah, ridiculously grippy too. They need to be for riding the hardtail on Calderdale rocks.

I've got some DMR ones on the fat bike - seem fine to me.

Used the Electrons and the Superstar ones. Both light, bombproof and cheap. Highly recommended.

I've got DMR V6 pedals that ST sent me when I renewed my card details - counted as new sub, apparently.

They're bright blue, so my Puffin is now a Puffin/Booby hybrid.

Slightly concave, but wider than original V8s, so nice shape for me. Grippy enough, cheap enough even when they're not free. Bearings are smooth, but too soon to tell you anything about how long they'll last..

I didn't like the older Nukeproofs much but the new Horizons are ace, got them on 2 bikes now.

@nedrapier - no, I paid for mine. Something with low heat transfer for riding in Finland in the winter.

I think they're fantastic - I honestly wouldn't go back to metal ones, moreover I truly believe that if the flat pedal was invented today as a new concept, they'd be made out of plastic, it's the best material for the job.

The only downside is that most of them (a lot of them are rebranded versions of the same thing) is that they rely on a alu cap to be screwed into the body to hold it in place - if you’re a bit of a chimp it's possible to destroy the threads in the body and they're basically bid fodder after that - the only bit you can't buy is the body, all the internals are easy to find, they fit loads of pedals.

I love the Vaults for the width more than the material.

To me that's more important.

I've got some old Nano's at the moment but I tried some nano x over the winter and they made the old nano's seem a bit crap. Are the Electrons better than old Nano's? Or would I need to spring for something like the Nano X or Vaults or something?

My lad has knackered the bushings in his V6's in a year. Not great. Going to try the nukeproof ones next. I hope i'm not in a groundhog day cycle of buy cheap, buy again repeatedly.

I have the nukeproof on one bike and think they're great, but the pins are brutal and I think if I ever wear my 5.10s on them I might not be able to get back off

Actually browsing for cheap flat pedals this morning, and I've narrowed it down to Nukeproof Horizon or Neutron.

I'm not sure about the lack of spanner flats on the Neutron axle, otherwise that's the only real difference I can make out.

Anyone find this a problem, or just use a nice long allen key?

My calves will never be the same, they really are as sharp as a pin at first.

You don't need to do pedals up tight, I fairly often just do mine up by hand. I've never had one loosen on me and it's easier to avoid crossed threads.

I got some superstar plastics, theyre not as grippy as my nano x. I'm still getting used to them, havent tried them in the wet

I'm not sure that's great advice. No need to go mad but I always start them off by hand, do the old freewheel backwards thing whilst holding the axle still to wind them on, then tighten up snug.

Potentially yeah.

I'm not giving advice it's just what I have done in the past as a serial pedal swapper. I was more making the point that lack of pedal spanner flats isn't really a big deal.

They tighten themselves up as you pedal though so like I say I've had no issues.

Just the cheap Shimano ones - 520s i think? I use them on my cx bike. Had a couple of sets kicking about. Indestructible and always work

If you grease the threads before fitting then they should come off easily with a normal hex key.

The Nukeproof Horizons are great IME. Mine have been a big improvement on the Vaults I have which have repeatedly fallen apart.

@hobnob, was it you that had put the titaniuma axles out of an older nano pedal, into the horizon plastics?

El Plastiques from Superstar, on my two bikes and my on my sons, lasted nearly two years without a grumble (or any TLC). The pins are sharp, rip 5.10 soles quite a lot, but that's the price of GRIP. I'll be getting more or similar when I need them.
