Is it the bolt, or what the bolt screws into?

Bolt is cheap to replace. Bit it screws into -maybe not so cheap! Some forks come with replaceable steel inserts there as the magnesium casting is fragile: threads strip under less bolt torque/tension, and it allagedly cracks easier than aluminium or steel.

It happens when the bolts are over-tightened (they only need a wee nip up). Depends on the fork and your luck really when it comes to riding on them now.

36s or older Marzocchis by any chance?

They are manitou minute pro forks 2011 -2012 the crack is left to right on the face plate in the corners i was told to put a shim in the pinch slot iv looked on other sites where people said yes it will be fine or no it seems to be a common thing
