I am putting together a budget downhill bike and am debating what tyres to put on. I don’t want to spend any money if I can avoid it so it will have to run on what I have in the garage. The options are:

Bonti Big Earl 2.5
Kenda Nevegal 2.1
Conti Vertical 2.3
Maxxis ADvantage 2.25 60a
Maxxis High Roller 2.35 60a (on my main bike but can be borrowed)
Conti Race King 2.2 Supersonic (on my main bike but can be borrowed)
Tioga Factory DH F or R (I may be able to stretch to buy 1 of these from CRC if pushed!)

Let me know your thoughts on a reasonable front and rear combo, it will be on a rather burly hardtail with RS Domain’s on the front is that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Never used them, but the big earls sound like the obvious choice as they're the biggest size.

To clarify I only have one of each of the above tyres, though i could possibly get a second Nevegal off my dad bike if i really needed to (he would be overly impressed and it would also mean travelling to get it off him).

That would mean a skinny front and fat rear tho? The HR is about 2.1 in the real world.

Armchair speculation ahoy...

I would be tempted to try the Big Earl on the front, and whichever is the biggest out of the Nev, Vert or ADvantage on the rear. I don't know anything about Tioga.

You would probably want to get some thick downhill tubes to go with whatever you choose, as these aren't thick tyres tho(?)

I was thinking that high roller levels of grip would be nice on the front, and as its a hardtail, go big on the back.

Big Earl is out.

You don't want something that sounds a lot like "Big Girl" on the side of a DH bike?
