looking into a good second hand orange segment 29er. Friend has one in good spec and well looked after. Im hefty chap looking to do mixture of decent hill days and bit of rough trail centre but nothing severely technical. My first 29er and first Orange and looks to fit the bill of robust all day bike. Any thoughts/ experience from STW crew?
I have a Gyro with a -2° angleset, so basically a segment. Its great. A great all day bike...covers ground well and hard to ruffle.
If it’s still in warranty and your mate will get it warrantied for you if it cracks then by all means consider it. If not, I wouldn’t. I know a few people who have had cracked Orange frames or swingsrms and those are all on frames built in the last few years. Fine if you have a warranty and Orange sort tou out but expensive if they don’t.
Did enjoy mine but the rebound blowing several times soured it. I did use it to its limits, I'm tall and was about 14st at the time but ultimately I'd say the tiny shock can't keep up with what the bike is capable of.
I'd look elsewhere if your a bigun as you'll have to run high psi. Could be ok mind if your just steady away on it but I think I wasn't the only one who came to this conclusion going from a thread on here sometime ago.
Oh yeah. I also had to use the warranty on the swingarm as well 😂 but you've never really owned an orange unless you've cracked it!
I like mine. 6’2” 15 stone, have put a token in the rear shock, but no cracks. Maybe I’m not rad enough. Been to bpw, lakes as well as the usual north and South Downs.
I switched to one from my 26” Enduro a couple of years back. Considering how little travel it has, it’s a bit of a hooligan. The faster you go the better it goes. My only criticism of it is the shock as others have mentioned. I’m about 95kg but find even with the largest volume spacer and a fresh service it still rips through the travel on big hits. I know I can put more air in but then it feels a bit harsh. I’ve had the shock tune checked and it’s right for a single pivot.
You see lots with angle sets and the like fitted. Personally I don’t know why you would. I’ve never felt it needed to be slacker riding the likes of a coed Y Brenin, Macc Forest off piste and Singletrack in the alps

Managed 100 miles in under 11 hours at twentyfour12 with it.
Ride the EWS course in Ireland on it.
28lb and a treat to ride everytime.
Mine was transformed by a Cane creek db il shock,don't ride it much now after buying a Pace RC529 hardtail
