Anyone got one? looking to chop my road bike and gravel bike in for 1 bike that does it all but not sure if it will cut it as a fast road bike? also a bit hampered by the size of double crank set that can be run on it 50 - 36 is the biggest smallest if I've read that right?

If you want another bike you don't have to justify it, just buy it and hide it in the shed, she won't notice.

Mine is setup with 2*11 running 50/34 and 11/40. It works fine. it's very light (7.6kg) and I could easily get another 400-500g off it by swapping to a DA9100 11-30 cassette and some 28mm tyres.

So far, over the 105km that I've ridden it (2 rides with 40mm tyres) I've averaged over 33kph. It seems pretty damn fast when compared to my old gravel bike (Kinesis Trispter). I've got a spare set of road wheels which I'll try this week.

Appears to be more than possible.Not the Open Up, but the theory still holds. I'm tempted to do similar, but not in your price range. Was thinking of getting rid of a cheap hardtail and winter road road bike / commuter and getting a Space Chicken or a Fairlight Secan.
Definately think its possible that the gravel bike with appropriate wheels will be suitable as a road bike.
Exploro is also max of 50-36. I'd go 1x personally.

I've had no issues running my Bokeh as a gravel bike and a road bike with different wheels. Lately club runs and commutes have been on the Bokeh with road plus 650b wheels on it and 47mm tyres.

I decided to splash out on a Definition as a 'proper' road bike as I was feeling flush. Turns out I hardly ever use I and when I do I don't like it as much as the Bokeh so I'll be going back to a gravel bike and two sets of wheels.

A couple of people I know have them. One is decked out in all manner of exotica and he uses it as a road bike, gravel bike and trekking bike. I've been on chain gangs with him and he had no difficulties keeping up/setting the pace even with the balloon tyres he had on it. Seems a very capable bike.

It is a tripster atr2 that i have as a gravel/road bike its a good gravel bike but too lardy for club roadie efforts. I use my propel for that. But im more and more convinced to just chop them in for 1 bike so might sell the tripster frame and propel.

A mate of mine has the space chicken and i like it but can only be run 1x and for a capable road bike i would want a double at the front and a rear cassete without the big jumps in gears.
I tried 1x originally on the tripster but hated it on the road.

You Tube 'Rides of Japan', he's been using one for a while. Seems pretty pleased with it and has got it down to a ridiculous weight.

Mine was an ATR V1. And was built up to be around 18.5lbs. The Open Upper is around 16.8lbs. So almost a KG lighter with slightly heavier gear (the ATR was using DA9000 rear mech and 11-28 cassette, whereas the UP is on XTR. So maybe another 200-250g.

I did similar but not with an Open UP, chopped a cervelo r2 and a london road for a ridley xtrail carbon with ultegra and double chainset. Stock wheels have gravel tyres, got some hunt wheels with 28's on at present although I may go for a larger road tyre one the present ones are finished. Really happy with it, with the road wheels on its reasonably light, never weighed it, rides well on the road and stiff in teh bb area for power transfer. Gravel wheels on for alittle explore, rode all winter on them with the specific mudgaurds that are made for it and a little bit of touring with bike pacing seat pack. More than pleased with the decision.

the only problem I've found with using a road / gravel bike is that they have different gear requirements.
A 50/34 and 11-28 wasn't great for me off-road, especially carrying weight. I had this on my Domane for doing the SDW. If your doing more road riding and not worried about long days off-road with lots of climbing, then it's no concern. All depends on the riding you'll be doing....

Someone will be along soon to say they did the SDW with 50kgs and a 53/39 and 11-23.....but being serious the gearing/riding choices just need some careful consideration.

That’s why I’m using a road compact chainset and XTR M9000 11-40 cassette and mechs.

I can tow my daughter in the Chariot up anything that I come across.

Also just heard cycle scheme have lifted the 1000 limit hence its a good time to get one.
I'll get flamed on here for that statement. I do cycle to work nearly everyday they just don't need to know i do it on a £50 single speed!!!!

Okay, so this morning for my commute I fitted my road wheels (again CK with Nextie Carbon) with 32c tyres at 55/65 front rear and a DA9100 11-30 cassette.

Over 28km my average speed was 35.4kph with 170m of climbing and 220m of descent. I had to fully stop four times for traffic lights/junctions and slow another 5-7 times for other commute based obstructions like fellow riders and choke points.

I think it's fair to say that it'll make a decent road bike.

Having had a bright green bike, I’d have to say blue. There are many colours which can be matched to blue, but for green, only black really works.
