"Eliminate dropped chains forever and more than double your chainring life with the new OneUp Components Chainguide."
Really necessary or a way to get us to open our wallets yet again, needed product or marketing ploy?

I'd buy one for the minimal nature of the guide, rather than any improvement in chainring life. Unless they're lots of money, in which case I won't buy one at all.

It looks nice enough and luckily for you one-up answer your question for you on their site.

Why do I need a guide and a Narrow Wide Chainring?
On a social ride this means getting dropped by your friends. But when racing an Enduro a dropped chain can cost you the podium

Don't necessarily believe everything I read.

They're marketing it as something to stop you dropping chains when their narrow-wide chainrings stop functioning properly.

If that's the deal then why bother with a narrow wide at all?

It's like they've "invented" the set-up I used to have when I was running 1x9.

Because you can get a narrow wide ring for the same price as a none narrow wide. 😉

They claim this works with the oval rings, so I'm keen to see how much they are.

Do we have any idea on price in the UK yet?

How can it possibly prolong chainring life?

It does smell weird tbh, but to be fair they've never claimed that a narrow-wide can never drop the chain. The chainring wear explanation isn't ridiculous, imo, no idea if it's true or not.

The product itself, and the 77designs, makes perfect sense though- I made myself something similiar just before the whole narrow wide thing kicked off, narrow/wides are so close to doing the job that it never seems to make sense to put a full on chainguide on but a wee minimal one just to give it a steer is pretty logical.

I thought it prolonged the life by providing a bit of extra retention so a worn ring could continue to be used.
