Looking for a SPD pedal for my future all year commuter/winter road training bike, any options that have a flat side for normal shoes and a SPD side plus strong engagement? Have used XT SPDs before and had issues clipping out during sprinting even when fully cranked up (never had that with SPD-SL btw).

I’ve got shimano a530 on the gravel bike. If anything I have the other problem, takes a big old movement to release. Thats with tension wound right off. May do the job.

Don’t find the flat side that comfy tho, rounded shape maybe. Unless firm soles can get some discomfort. It’s only short run to shops stuff for me on flats anyway.

Those may be the ticket, seems like they're perhaps stronger engagement than the eh500s?

If the XTs unclip I doubt any other Shimano pedal will be any different. The designs aren't that different. More money gets you less weight and better bearings.

At least I want to steer away from light engagement models which I think eh500 is.

EH500 are those light action ones - and they don't go very tight at all

Nah xt touring do have a lighter disengagement . I have them on my commuter/winter bike.

Pedalling circles they have never come undone. Pedaling squares they may well do. The a500s on my propel are much more solid.

Fair enough. Learn something new etc. Shame as the xt platform is really good. Wonder if they could be rebuilt with a stronger spring.

Sweet, will look for some A530s then.

Can’t fault the Funn Mambas I use on my gravel bike. Proper big platform for using without clips.

Downside of A530 versus XT is that the flats are very slippery in the wet in my experience

Agreed.

My single sided commuter pedals were PDM540s with the reflector block on one side - definitely recommend the pedal reflector to help drivers see you due to the movement.

the xpedo ambix mentioned above are a pretty good quality pedal, although mine have also been resigned to my gravel/commuter (just because single sided has no place on a mountain bike)
i only have my SPD on the lightest setting and its fine for a newb SPD user like me
however i don't like the SPD side on a mountain bike as there's no platform (on that side) and my foot rotates
the platform side is more than adequate for average riding

are you using un-worn single-release (not multi-release) cleats? I've never had mine clip out (but I have with old multi-release)

I was using single-release, new ones.

e Funn Mambas

Look very nice, bit expensive only

Another vote for Funn Mambas, although the flats might be pretty fierce on commuting shoes. Like most bike components they have increased in price by over 50% in the last eighteen months so they are expensive
