Off to Slovenia in September and my girlfriend, seeing one of the trail centres in the Rough Guide said "you should do that one afternoon." Of course, I insisted that I wasn't going on holiday with her to go mountain biking, but... so I've got a pass out for an afternoon (let's call it a day shall we?) ๐
Can anyone recommend anywhere with good technical riding, but not full-on gnar, with hire options nearby? We'll be meandering westwards from Ptuj to Bled, so up near the Austrian border would be good.
up Mt Matajur into Italy pretty, double-track climb to the top . full-on twisty steep singletrack for about 15km, the tracks for another 10km. Dunno where to hire bikes from, tho. Bet there's somewhere in Kobarid.
Where do you live, tnw? I've got a bike guide book you could borrow.
Maribor and the bike park at Pahorje ?

Thanks for the offer, I'm in Newcastle. You?
Pohorje looks a bit limited to be honest. Just one 7km blue run.
There's a 60km supported group ride round Porhoje in September, which sounds great but it's on the day we fly into Zagreb ๐
I was hoping there'd be some nice alpine singletrack somewhere.

There is! Julian Alps = Alpine. ๐
Mt Matajur is 1642m. Drive to Livek at 700m, climb from there, ride south from the summit, then jog east to Savogna at 220. Leave gf with a lager shandy while you earn massive bf point by riding up the road to get the car.
Cracking day out. pm me/email me. I can post it to you if you can post it back? [Edit: just been googling looks like the routes are up on the web anyway - http://www.slovenia-trips.com/eng/mountain-biking/trip/1208/Matajur-a-tour-for-mtb-gurus
You need to spend some time in the Soca Valley anyway. Kobarid is where SSEC was last year. I can get some Slovenian fb contacts for you to ask about hire if you like?
Yup I'd third Matajur although the descent is mainly in Italy I think! We did the whole climb from Kobarid and its a fair old hoof but all on easy gradients. Descent is long with mellow gradient but techy limestone sections every so often. Its nice and varied.
Julian Alps = Alpine
Ha, yes, that had not escaped my attention!
The Soca Valley is definitely on our list. Cheers for the offer but I'll have a look through that site later if all the routes are on there. I'll see what I can find out about hire. That area seems to be pretty popular for all things outdoors so shouldn't be difficult to find (campsite I looked at even did bike hire I seem to remember).
And yes, looks like it's in Italy, but never mind!
starts and finishes in Slovenia, though!
If the weather's good spend a night at the refuge at Mangart saddle. cheap and comfy. It's an amazing spot to watch the sunset from, and you won't want to leave and tackle the drive down in the dark! take some wine up and soak up the mountain peace. And the wine.
And spend a day in kayaks with Prijon Sports on the river down the hill from Bovec. We went turned up as complete novices, spent an intro half-hour on basic strokes on a flat bit of the river, then headed down river. Great tuition, perfect way to see the river and the valley. We liked it so much we went back for more the next day. And the next!
You are not looking properly if that's all you have found
Having just returned from a week in Slovenia myself (more walking and gentle bike rides following rivers) I can say wherever you go, it's beautiful. I stayed NW Slovenia, Triglav National Park area. The walk up to the tri-border with Austria and Italy is quite something.
There are a few bike parks also, certainly one in Kranjska Gora. Julian alps must be littered with trials!
Enjoy
Good to hear. First time we've been and it looks amazing.
Rafting on the Soca is on the list too - my other half isn't particularly adventurous when it comes to that sort of thing but she seems keen.
I bet there's fantastic riding all over. I imagine I could quite happily take my bike and disappear for a few weeks, but this won't be that sort of trip. We like to pack it in so time is tight and I want to make the most of it.
Been there twice and cannot wait to return.
If you're camping, can I recommend http://www.camp-vili.si/ Villi is a legendary guy who will regale you of stories of the 10-day war plus treat you to some of the best homemade cooking and drinking you could hope for. It's just outside of Tolmin. Kobarid is where we stayed initially which is also very beautiful plus Bovec seems to be the home of most "adventure" companies.
The mountains up the Soca valley are just incredible, in particular Mount Krn where you can still walk amongst the old WW1 trenches at around 3000M! There are lots of guides if you fancy or maybe check trailforks? So many possible routes and usually much quieter than other Alpine areas.
You're actually making me realise I need to get back there asap!!
Some info HERE?
Also just got back from a long weekend in Slovenia.
Did some Kayaking on the Soca - fantastic.
MTBing also superb, did Matajur and the trail into Italy, what a trail..it just goes on and on and on. Quite a few trees down but the route around them is getting well trodden. Also then did the Capella Bes trail, also superb. Will definitely be going back
Ive recently come back from 3 weeks in Slovenia, after spending a week there last year with Ride Slovenia. We went back for another week's riding with them this year and it was even awesomer than last time. They are based in Luce, which is east of Bled/etc, close to the Austrian border, in the Savinja valley.
My first recommendation would be to contact Jon there; couple of our guys came with their better halves and it worked fine, there are options of other things to do, so if you wanted a day or two's guided riding- and it is superb riding!- then it could work out for all. Jon hires out Orange 5's too if you need.
Bike park wise, I've been to Kranska Gora and Krvavec bike parks. Both have uplift. KG has more of a straight-up bike park/DH feel to it, but has plenty of options to use the lifts to get out of the park. Krvavec has two trails, which are a bit more 'natural'. There's also a flow trail over the Austrian border called Petzen Flow, if that's your thing. The guided riding was vastly better than all of this stuff though! Edit- it is all pretty steep and either loamy and loose, or rocky and steep. Brilliant, but not very XC...
After the week there we did two week's vanning/camping in the Soca valley, Triglav national park, Bled/Bohinj etc. Rafting at Kobarid was great fun, as was some of the beauty of the walking in Triglav. Bled is a bit touristy, but it is a fantastic place. Bohinj is also beautiful, and less developed. I would imagine September as the ideal time to go, as it will be less busy. Having said that, neither are tourist traps in the way a lot of other famous spots can be!
Slight hijack - we're going to drive thru Slovenia to get to Croatia next month. We've been to Kranjska Gora before but don't know the south side of the Julian Alps at all
Can you recommend any good campsites near the big hills on the south side?
Are there any nice CX trails that we could gently bimble along? Nowt too difficult or techy - we're on holiday!
The rafting sounds like a good laugh - can you recommend any companies?
If you are passing Bohinj, then try to stop there. The lake is beautiful and great for swimming/paddleboarding etc. There is also what looked like a lovely lake side campsite @ElShalimo
Vogel bikepark on top of the Vogel is cable car assisted and is ok for a 3-4 runs. However, there is an excellent path down to Lake Bohinj cafe. It follows the little red+white target symbols painted on the trees+rock. Start at the top of cablecar and head down to left as you exit the cablecar. I did these last year on my HT when I had a few hrs spare whilst kids played in the lake.
I have GPX if required.
ElS. There are several campsites on that road as you drive down into Slovenia.
We stayed at Kamp Klin - great spot by the river, highly recommended. For rafting, there are loads of sports agencies in Bovec, but I'd recommend (again! ๐ ) going to Prijon Sports and learning to kayak. We went as complete beginners and ended up spending 3 half days paddling. Really rewarding.

As stated above, Campsite Willi. Tell him Gavin from Scotland sent you ๐
I'm in Slovenia now, spent the day at Bled. Amazing place.
