quick question, i'm plotting a roadie build based around used kit and wondered if there was a heap of difference between some late 80's dura ace brakes and a set of recent'ish DA 7800 - is there a huge leap in performance or much of a muchness?

i have a set of older ones already hence the question.

If they're dual pivot - no, not much difference to new ones.

If they're the old single pivot style ones then they won't be too powerful. Still good for the rear though (and the front if you're not too fussed), and probably a bit lighter too.

single pivot on mine.

i have ridden them a few summers ago and they seemed ok for what i wanted, but the weight difference that you mention is interesting. had'nt considered that.

Theres a massive difference! There was a big difference between 7700 and 7800! Mainly due to the pad compound rather than the actual design of the brake. 7800 are great stoppers

I was going to say that, and apparently 7900s are substantially more powerful again.

Definitely go with the 7800s.
