So I have Guide R’s on my hardtail - they are ok but I recently put a new style sram code r on the front of my fs (which also had a Guide r on the front and back) and it’s made me crave a little bit more power from my brakes. I’ve just picked up a cheap guide re from eBay to go on the back of the fs to match the code as much as possible without forking out for another Code.

Got me wondering about the old avid code r’s and how they compare to a guide r and a new code r. If I could get a cheapie secondhand set would I be best off using them as they come - or swapping the Calipers across to my existing guide r levers to effectively make my own guide REs. Might be a pretty cheap way of upgrading the power?

I've done as you suggest and used a Guide lever with the older style Code calipers without any issues.
The older style Code levers have reach and bite point adjust and are amazing brakes. I sold a pair around a year ago and wish I'd kept them. I haven't seen many places selling the old style Code but if you find any they are worth snapping up if you find a good deal.
They use the same pads as the current Codes so no issues with being future-proof.

So is it better to have the full old code setup - or use newer guide r levers with those older Calipers?
