There i was about to quickly change my gear cables for new Goodridge ones. Took the wrong side off of my Sram x9 shifters. Springs flying everywhere and 5 hours later unable to re-build them. Any advise please.

I've followed that site. The problem is trying to get the spring reloaded correctly. You need really small fingers!!. Any hints or tips. Will this be a £70 mistake. I thought i had done it but when i tried to change gear it would only move up three and the lever was pressed all the way forward.

Nightmare!!!!

I have a pair of x7 shifters (which I prefer to x9 as they feel a bit tougher and have nice indicator windows) that I might be tempted to sell as other bikes have Shimano and I'm trying to "standardise".

Fixes that problem 🙂

Does a female live with you with little dainty fingers?
Long nose pliers? 🙄

When a customer had done this we fixed it but it took two people at once to hold all the springs and bits and pingfukkits in right - a right pig of a job too.

After 12hours of swearing and red raw fingers i think i've fixed it :D. Just been on a 2 hour blast over the fells and the gears change pretty well. The only issue is when i push the larger lever forward to change gear it should release back slightly to engage another gear charge. It's not, so i have to pull it back slightly with my thumb. I think with all the pushing and pulling i may have lost the tension in the spring. I've rang several shops and all have told me that Sram don't sell that part as a spare. Can anyone point in in the right direction or should i just live with this?/

Cheers

It's fiddly but do-able. I rebuilt my XO shifter. A guy did the same in the shop where I used to work. We gave the customer a new one and eventually got the original one back together.

I still haven't worked out how you're actually meant to change the cables on X9s without getting into all kinds of trouble

I also haven't worked out wtf SRAM were smoking when they thought that was a good design?? 😡

Had this problem

This may do the trick (please excuse the sound track)

If not there is something that will help on U Tube.

As others have said, it's fiddly but very doable. If the lever isn't returning, it could be you've got the large washers/seals wonkey/dirty/in the wrong order. You have to be careful not to trap any or them in the spring when you tighten everything up, and a dash of GT85 helps everything run smoothly. It's difficult to explain but a bit of fiddling normally gets things working again.

There's some good walk throughs on the MTBR forum - that's where I got my info from. The X-9 & X-0 shifters are the same as far as a rebuild's concerned.

ahem, let me re-phrase. i still cant believe you need to take apart £70 shifters to change the cable!

"what were they smoking" still stands though 🙂

for the shifter that isn't spring back you probably just have the end of the spring in the wrong hole inside, take it apart carefully and try again. I made this mistake too, had to pull the other shifter apart v carefully to see how it went back together but figured it out in the end.

I done this the other week shifter was very lazy and not returning even with no cable in so i removed the bottom and then bits flew everywhere.

I did it the complete opposite to the guides though as i found the way the guide describes the coils of the spring can get crossed to easy which in turn rub and cause the problem you have.

I took everything out of the shifter so it was just a shell coiled the spring around the shifter lever then with needle nose pliers hooked it into the the shifter housing.

Now works like a charm 😀

Springs flew out of my X0's when i had 'em & managed to put 'em back ok & worked like new - was a right pain to change cables tho' especially how you need to clip the cable end in to that clip thing (if i remember correctly) - Back on Big S now since bikes with sram were nicked!! 😥
