Does the crown race have to go to the very bottom of the steerer and sit on the crown?
Magura menja 130 and cane creek s3.
Tia
geoff

edit - it only wants to go to about 5mm above the crown. What dp I use to knock it down further?

Yes it should go right down. Bit of plastic waste pipe and a big hammer is often recommended. Or tap it with a drift / old screwdriver working round it - not on the bearing surface tho obviously.

heat it in a mug of boiling water before fitting to make it easier

I wrap an old blunt wide flat screwdriver with a couple of layers of electrical tape, and lots of little taps rather than a couple of big wallops, to knock it home.

I swear a lot when dealing with headsets.

Cheers guys. Gentle taps with a block of wood seems to have done the trick 🙂

Why don't more companies make headsets with a split crown race? The Aerozine one I fitted to my Stumpy recently had it and was sooooo much easier!

On the other hand I was trying to fit a Ritchey h'set to a set of steel 700c forks the other day, and **** me it would not go on. Tried all the usual tricks to no avail, so in the end I took a hacksaw to it and gave it a split my self! Actually seems to work fine, done about 200 miles on it so far and no problems. This is on a road bike mind, not sure if I'd trust it on an MTB.
