[Closed] No Tubes ZTR Crest rims - How strong?

I like the look of the 340g weight and the 21mm internal width (the low sidewalls look to spread the tyre even further)

What I'm not sure of is just how tough, stiff or what sort of riding they're actually intended for?

At 21mm internal, they're 2mm wider than the 'aggressive cross country' Arch (though 420g) and 1.6mm narrower than the 'all mountain, heavy duty trail' flow rim (though 470g), though the crest and arch share the same 24.4mm external diameter so crests have much narrower sidewalls but is this to do with the crest (and alpine) being a newer generation rim?

Anyone know if the arch and flow rims are due an update (and weight drop) anytime soon?

I'll let you know in a week or two..!

Hope to build some up Friday evening and over the weekend. The Crests will be replacing XM819 UST rims. Have Flows on my other wheelset.

The lip for holding the tyre bead looks tiny, and there doesn't appear to actually be a lip on them.

This worried me somewhat, when I had a look at them in a shop the other week

I was wondering the same, the dealer told that they are lot stronger than Mavic 717 but I still went for Crest only on the front on the new bike. The rear wheel will be something else as I have ruined few rims on the rear but never on the front.

I've destroyed a couple. Wouldn't use them now for the sort of riding I do, though I accept that I'm a clumsy ox, and very hard on kit.

I on the other hand am a smooth ox... and generally very light on this type of kit, as im only a little over 60kg. for me they are very strong rims, and needed truing 2 times last season.

I've got them on my 5. They've had some hammer, but not abuse. Still strong & true.

Nickf, it sounds like I may fall into the same category ..
When you say 'I'm a clumsy ox, and very hard on kit', could you elaborate at all, ie riding what sort of stuff on what sort of setup?

I seem to think I've read somewhere (either old posts on here or notubes site) the new style lip holds tyres better than the old style lips on arch/flow/olympic/race etc though it still seems pretty small

I'd be replacing Mavic XM719 Discs (19mm internal) wanting something slightly wider as they're limiting my tyre choice, without giving a too round a shape and losing the egdes 2.35" High Rollers are sensibly about it. Compared to a DT EX5.1 for eg the mavics do seem to hold a LOT of tyre wall as bead

340g crest compared to a 470g flow is a big difference, over 0.5lb between a set of rims, especially when the flows are heavier than my current rims ..

James - I love downhill but have liitle in the way of skill, so the bike tends to ridden through just about everything rather than expertly glided over. Landing a drop/jump is fine, but smoothness is not something I'd lay claim to. Given that I weigh 15st and tend to hammer the bike in the Alps (and anywhere else I can) I've managed to damage most components - bearings/hubs get killed easily, and wheels used to be a problem. Bike in this instance is a Turner 5-Spot running Pikes, and usually on 2.3" or so UST tyres running at 35-40psi.

I now use XM819 - I'd like them a little wider for tyre profile purposes, but in reality they're fine, and other than one small ding from clouting a particularly uncooperative rock, they've proved utterly bombproof.

Next question - anyone know where you can get them cheap in North America?!

I too am running 355's on my Full Suss and also weigh in at 12.5st.

Not the most skillful floaty light rider but I don't hammer through things, do my very best to pop and lift over tricky stuff.

They've been fine for 10 months now ๐Ÿ˜€

80kgs and I've a fairly small bag 'o tallent. Stayed true for the 6 months I've had them on my 100mm hardtail. Crashed them into plenty of square edge rocks etc and they've shrugged everything off. As a wheel set (with AM classic hubs) they feel way stiffer than my old XT+ Mavic 717 wheelset.

Bead holds Maxxis non tubeless easy peasy. running 25 - 28 psi no probs.

Hmm, on reflection I might be getting toward you're abusivenss there nickf. I may be a little lighter atm, but its quite possible I could go the other way in future, I'm probably fairly overdue a move to a 140/150mm 20mm forked FS sometime and along with hopefully losing some fear toward breaking my current bike on silly drops etc, if a bigger bike were to give me even a bit of the progression boost my FS has done then it could end up a bit of recipe for disaster If I choose crests

When you say destroyed a couple, is this just dinged rims/a bit out of true or proper pringling of wheels/breaking the rims?
