Sorry to jump on this thread but what ratio's do you guys use?

Currently looking into making my old frame up into a single speed.

Is a 38t front and 16t rear to much for trails? Or is it to 'spinny' for road.

I intend to join a local road club for small 20 mile rides at a avg speed of 16-18mph. with the 38/16 combo.

I'm running 32:16 on a rigid Soul, which for me is a good compromise for about 50/50 road/off-road use..

The road sections for me though are just a means to an end, and I prefer to ride fairly technical trails.. with this in mind I'm erring towards a 32:18 set up and aiming to reduce the amount of time on road as much as poss.. (cos it's just no fun)

Look Fournales? Cool....

Here's mine:
[img] [/img]

Thorn Raven Enduro frame bought silly cheap from classifieds.
I run 32:18 as I find it better in the relatively slow speed rooty nadgery bits and I have a geared bike for when I want to blast along faster than the ss can do.

Pffff - niche!
26" SS full suss, using 34 Wobbly ring from Taz and 16 rear, rides exceptionally well.

Bit cheeky - as it's now geared! Ran it 38 / 17 which was ok for local trail centre (Haldon) but too highly geared for my feeble limbs on the longer road climbs. Might be tempted back to SS with a 36t chainring at some point though; I like the lack of clutter.

This is crying out for an EBB or a magic ratio solution - I've got an itch developing, but I'm not quite ready to trade it in for a SS specific frame just yet..

It's an Alenax. You pump the pedals up and down like a treadle.

It's actually got gears (the long arms) but I've locked it into one. It's hard to explain how it works, but it involves lengths of wire, a couple of chains and 2 freewheels (one each side). It's obvious when you look at it though.

I've got it in Oz, but I may get it shipped over. It would be fun to do a SS event on it.

Jobs to do/ bits to fit
Bleed brakes
Pick up matching rear wheel (that one was used so I could go for a shakedown, came off my am bike....)
Fit king headset and trim steerer
Buy/fit shorter stem
Buy ti seat post
Change that bloody chain
Umming and ahhhhing over what ration to use. 32/16,17 or 18. Massive differences between them?
Raw the frame (might be a summer job though!)

Judge away!

Maiden voyage tonight. Need to get myself a Surly Tugnut, some proper tyres and maybe some proper bars (big friggin silly wide things) but overall, love it! Curtis S1, Salsa Cromotos, Middleburn Uno, DMR/Mavic/WI wheelset, SLX brakes, Mary bars, SDG I-Beam seat and post etc...
