[Closed] Newish to mtb - what bike to buy?

Ok, so i'm not that new to riding bikes, but am looking to buy my first decent bike. I have a Kona Fire Mountain, which has been fine starting out, but now i'm looking for something a bit more serious.

I ride XC and focus more on the descents than on climbing. Probably looking to spend around £700 ish on something second hand. I'm 6'1" if that helps. I don't know if it's at all worth upgrading parts on the Kona, or if it's so poor that I should just get rid of it and start fresh.

Thanks a lot, any help is greatly appreciated.

Firstly, there no right answer.
Do you want a full sus, xc racer (or combination of both) hardcore hard tail or fully ridged?
Where do you ride? Do you plan to race?

Thanks for the quick reply, I probably should have specified better. I'd like a hardtail, and ride around the Sheffield area - out to the peaks and the odd trip to Wharncliffe. I don't plan on racing, just riding for fun.

Then I'd suggest something like a 140mm forked hard tail.
I believe the on-one's get good mentions in stw land, but really you're going to have loads of options, you'd probably stretch to a decent Orange P7, Cotic or something similar but I'm really the wrong person to know these particular bikes as I'm a short travel, XC type person.

Was just about to suggest a P7 myself but I was beaten to it!

I've a Pure 7 with a 140mm fork and it's a pretty versatile bike which seems to cope with pretty much anything. There are deals around.

How old is the Fire Mountain?

It's the 2008 model - worth keeping any of it?
