Just bought some light bicycle 38mm rims for my new build and not sure what hubs to use. Choice is reuse some 12 year old Chris Kings or buy something new.
Kings are not a no cost option as will need XD driver and 15mm front axle. Not that keen on Hope as have them on the current bike as the bearings have needed doing more frequently than on any previous bike, although have not ruled them out.
What would you recommend?
DT350 or 240?
I have a dt 240 rear in the spares box and will have a pd 8X dynamo fromt hub.
just saving up for the rims ๐

Some days I love them, some days I curse the tiny bearings!
I am curious to give Goldtec a try. They do a 100g 15mm bolt thru front hub which ticks all the right boxes for me but the rear hub is a little heavy and expensive ๐ Does anyone know if Goldtec do a XX1 freehub? Front hubs are easy to choose but rears vary greatly in how easy they are to live with! Hope have actually been the easiest to live with for me so far but are made of pig iron for a weenie
Industry Nine maybe OP? Absolute Black if you don't mind guinea pigging them?
DT's have proved more finniky in UK conditions IME, my freind has a pair of hopes and a pair of DT's and the DT's spend a hell of allot more time of the bike than the hopes...
MTB, cx or road build?

I must say I expected to be changing bearings loads, but mine are now over a year old, not particularly well cared for and still perfectly smooth.
MTB, cx or road build?
I'm assuming MTB, although from 38mm I thought that meant depth, but then the XD hub body suggested MTB to me, with wide rims.
@Tom, are those the 240s? Pretty weird if so, my sets need... Hmm, let's say 1/4 as much care/parts as my Hopes? That might be being generous to the Hopes tbh since the DTs get used in the worst conditions.
240's old ones to, and the hopes are original pro 2's... The DT's are usually on the hardtail but they both get used equally. Could be to do with the relative ease of servicing the hopes keeping them in better nick for longer?
People get hung up on the fact you need one special tool to do one of the 6 bearings in a pair of 240s. It's a bit of a non-issue IMO. They're extremely easy to service. I've always found all of my 240s supremely reliable.
My wheelbuilder was really keen to push me towards the new Novatec 542/541 combo for my LB build, he particularly rated them for the bearings and very quick pickup.
Although I was seriously tempted I stuck with Hope, in part because I was adamant I wanted silver hubs, and also I had a spare Hope XD driver in the toolbox so in the long run the Hope was going to be cheaper as I had what I needed when freehub replacement came round.
If I hadn't been so vain or tight I'd have gone with the Novatec.
How often would you need to replace a freehub!? Particularly an XD one that doesn't suffer the burring issues? Can you replace the bearings in a Hope one?
I'm looking for a rear hub I can swap between QR and 142x12 by just swapping end caps, does that new novatec do that?
I think the 350 allows that plus is very quiet so it's my current #1. Does anyone know where to find PCD etc measurements for the DT hubs? can't see them on the site.
Hope would be easiest swap but I'm fed up of the noise and the bearing life on my latest has been miserable.

It's a bit out of date I think, but the DT Spoke Calculator should have all the dimensions for their own hubs, you'll have to put your own rim ERD in if you want it to calculate, or you can use their hub dimensions for your own calculator.
As njee says, apart from one bearing servicing a 240 is basically the same as servicing a Hope. Wee bit simpler because of the better freehub seal design. But, that one bearing that needs the special tool and to be fair, can be a bastard- but needs replaced pretty much once every second eternity because it's so well protected.

Not very often, but there was some logic in my head that because I had a Hope spare, it made sense to buy a Hope hub.
And they were silver. ๐
Had superb reliability from DT240's no issues after 18 months of abuse.
DanW one of my mates has XX1 with Goldtec hubs
hope all the way, easy to get spares for, can run just about any axle easily, can service them with a rock, and your supporting the uk which probably isnt a big deal to most on here with all the euro/german mailorder threads that keep popping up here.
also got a mate with dt hubs (240's?)on enve wheels and they do seem to spend alot of time in the bike shop, special tools and apprently they needed some heat on them to strip the rear something or other last time they went in, **** that.
uk hubs for uk riding no?
Thanks folk some useful advice. Doug why is your builder pushing the notate a, they look nice but the rear seems very heavy. What are the advantages?
Those absolute black hubs look interesting. Has anyone seen any real reviews?

this +1. Only time i buggered a DT swiss hub was when it interacted with me. The irony was the 6th bearing was pristine and didn't even need replaced after 3 years.

Bearing quality and pickup of the freehub, plus well priced....though I couldn't give you pricing as he's a mate so I was getting a mates rate.
The only review of sorts I ever found was here

one of my mates has XX1 with Goldtec hubs
I kind of assumed they would have an XX1 freehub but that is good to know, thanks. How does your buddy get on with his Goldtec hubs?
Those absolute black hubs look interesting. Has anyone seen any real reviews?
Well they use a patented freehub that isn't AB's patent so you would expect there are other hubs out there with similar internals with existing reviews. AB are not forthcoming with which patent they use and it isn't Tune's with whom they have a close association... the shells at least do look suspiciously like Alchemist hubs but I don't know the relationship between the two.
If it's wheels I intend to keep awile 240s
But the novatec are a very good price / weight but not tried any personally
If you decide to get rid of the Kings let me know as I'm after a set for my cross bike
I've got a set of king r45disc that are very nice but also a set of novatecs on their 2nd winter, very impressed.
