Currently being pestered by an individual on what bike they should get (50 something male who wants a full suss skill compensator) now the rub is should he go for a good second hand or in one case third hand frame in the 400 to 600 range or get a new frame in the 700 to 800 range. All the frames considered are 'boutique' frames, e.g turner, yeti, maverick, foes, and so on. He has acquired all the parts for a nice build, Fox 36s talas, xt groupset magura louise brakes.

What do people reckon???

S/h every time unless he has money to burn.

Yup as long as he can spot trouble.

Secondhand is good if you know what you're looking for. You may need to factor in the cost of a set of bushes and bearings - probably worth doing before it's built up.

On the other hand, nothing beats the feeling of a brand new bike 🙂

You pay your money and take you choice (and chances).

I'd go s/h on that budget, but do you mean he's being fussy about boutique only?

Trek Remedy 2008 or 2009 frame would be my first choice - they seem to go for around £400+.

Okay at this moment there is a
5 year old frame with coil shock 450
3 year old frame with expensive shock just serviced 600
new frame (maverick) 699
new frame with new fox shock 750

I usually say second hand but this time new seems better??

Not seen any treks at that price and would he need a new rear wheel his set are qr rear

He did well to ask you and for you then to search using STWoogle™

Can he not use a PC?

Personally I'd just get a new heckler.

Warrenties are definitely worth their weight. I'm always surprised when people buy stuff second hand for 95% ish of what it costs to buy new....(ebay)

Yep. £900 heckler, or that £800 yeti 7 that was mentioned yesterday if he wants to go bigger

I've had several 'high-end' full sus frames and they have all been fine. Plenty choice out there and it's [s]shocking[/s] surprising how little some of them have been used and very easy to spot the ones which have been hammered.

I would almost always go 2nd hand as you get much better value and don't get upset at every little scratch you inevitably pick up.

I agree I have had and sold several high end frames, especially mavericks but at 699 a new one looks great value..............also second hand prices seem to be really high at the moment especially ebay or am i misreading the market/meercat?
