I recently stripped the thread on some 6 month old XT cranks. The pedal does go in but occasionally unwinds when pedalling no matter how tight I tighten it. I either replace them which seems like a waste of a lot of relatively newish crankset; get a new/used NDS matching 170mm crank arm, or repair it. If the latter, what’s the best long term solution that’s also cost effective? I have cleaned out the thread on the crank and pedal and threadlocked it in but this might be a short term fix. For ref, I can get the same cranks for £75 new ATM for some context…cheers

If it's not too bad, then what I did was get one of those aluminium pretension bolt things to replace the plastic one. That and a bit of threadlock and it's been fine ever since. YMMV.

This kind of thing:

Make sure you get the right kind as there are two different threads in existence.

I believe that non drive side arms are available separately which would probably be the best solution. Permanent threadlock would probably work but you may need to remove the pedal at some point.

Ahhh…I should have been more specific…I meant the pedal threads, not the other end!

A Helicoil is a new steel thread insert that goes into a oversized hole. Decent bike shop probably has the kit to do this or a car garage, but you'll likely not save much money over a new crank arm.

£50 for a brand new set, and sell yours as spares or repair.

It's not my ad, but i did buy my Deity carbon bars from the guy... who I believe is the Dream Bike Build dude on YouTube.

Get a new/used crank. Really not worth it.

Yep, find someone who's buggered the opposite side crankarm and come to an arrangement.

I've borked my NDS SLX 165mm crankarm, if anyone has a spare to sell or wants to buy the DS arm 😀

You can install a threaded insert, might be worth checking if you have a local workshop with the tools, Tarty Bikes will do it for £20 by post.

You can see whats involved if you want to DIY (Ceeway used to be the cheapest source of the reamers/taps)
