And make my riding partners nauseous.
Apparently the smell of sweat isn’t coming out in the wash and the odour “smells like dead goats rotting in the sun” or so I’ve been told.
I’ve used both hot and cold water, with and without bleach and nothing works. It’s only the polypropylene jerseys – everything else smells like roses.
I understand there’s something (other than petrol) I can use that will get rid of the stink.
Help.

I've been told that pre-soaking kit in white vinegar gets rid of lingering stinkiness - haven't tried it myself tho, 'cos my kit is always lovely & sweet smelling (Cough 😉 )

try a couple of cap fulls of detol in with your wash next time. Is usually a pretty good solution for manky smelling thermals.

Don't wear those ones then when you're riding with others

Boil wash. Worked on my canoeing thermals but shortened the life.

It isn't the sweat that smells, it's the bacteria that live on the sweat. Might be the end of these jerseys but for others, occaional washing above 60 will help but shorten the life. Best is to was immediately after a ride.

Maybe keep them in the freezer? GCSE biology coming in here.

B.R.O.K.E. 😕
Unfortunately, I've got a closet full of reeking jerseys.
If I had to do it all over again, yup, I'd go wool.

I, too, have heard it's bacteria that makes the stink. I'll try the freezer (hope the don't melt the ice cubes) and then boiling water.
Cheers

Merino all the way for me, I can't wear normal cycling jerseys for longer than 5 minutes without smelling like a taxi driver

Febreze sprayed onto the bits that smell worst (armpits?) about 10 mins before you want to wear it.

Surely that will just preserve the bacteria and prevent them growing. Freezing doesn't kill bacteria, AFAIK.

Hot hot wash, dry outside in the sun. If it still doesn't clear up try an antibacterial fluid in with it.

Maybe soak the offending articles in a tub of warm water & bicarb? It stops my bike shoes smelling like they've been marinated in tomcat spray and tramp's piss.

Take off and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Ive had the same problem with my fave. jerseys..

Ive managed to solve the issue to an extent..

1. Get yourself some pure soap flakes, boots was the only place I could find them.

2. Try and scrape out as much of the residue or old soap powder from the filler tray as you can.

3. Bung in the correct amount of soap flakes as per the packet Say's

4. Cold washing is a no, no, just doesn't kill the bacteria that makes the pong.. wash in at least a 60deg or above

here is what Ive found with this method,

My old clothing that used to smell still have a little pong but no where near as bad as they used to when using normal detergents. It took around 2-3 washes before they started to stop smelling. the problem is once the clothing starts to smell it's hard to get it out..

All my new cloths smell as fresh as the day i bought them.. ha.. even after a 4hr trek... lol

Never wash you jerseys with any thing els other than Soap Flakes, I promise you it works..

good luck

I find soap flakes not particularly good on the stinky man-mades. Its good for preserving my DWR jackets though. 🙂

I save it up in the garage untill theres enough for a full load and then wash it with a double strength detergent hit. Seems to generally do the trick.

For proper stinkies I'll do a 50degree wash occasionally, which seems to do the job too.

Good lord, what is it with some people I've worn the same jersey through out both solo 12 hour and a 24 hour races, the next day it has no more odour than a warm biscuit.

this should do the job, precisely what it's designed for and shouldn't ruin your kit either

Something in this months TGO mag about this ... best thing they found was hydrogen peroxide solution ... they reckon it didn't bleach the clothes either.

always wash clothes as soon as you get back - leavign them lying around damp with sweat just promotes bacteria growth.

Extremely hot wash.

I killed a polyprop running vest last year - it was so bad (forgot to wash it) that I binned it. Now handwash my tops after every run!

My MTB stuff is all merino - needs some serious bad hygiene to get even slightly whiffy.
