[Closed] Mud. To bother or to wait for the dry weather to return?

So, the mud’s back!

I persuaded a pal of mine who is booked into the 50km Merida in 2 weeks to come out on a training ride with the Watford Massiv on Thursday. He’d chosen not to ride in the winter snow fearing a fall, then seemingly never ventured out in these wet months thus far.
It came back to bite him on our ride. He fell, albeit just the once, thought his High Rollers were just awful in the mud, spent most of his time sliding and getting frustrated at not getting anywhere (in the granny ring) and found his fitness levels not what he’d expected.

I took the time to explain why this was likely the case but the moral being that if you don’t ride the trails is all weathers, you can’t expect to gain the knowledge & skills needed to begin to conqueror mud, ice and snow if you only ride the trails when they’re dry.

That said, it was a good wake-up call as he’s sensibly commuted his Merida 50km ride for the 25km this time ‘round, which he’ll ride with his son on his first Merida, which will be really neat for them both, hoping then to tackle the 50km in round 2.

Yesterday I ordered some Swamp Things for my DH bike.

I might order another pair for my XC bike. The perfect all year round tyre for Devon 🙁

It's not been that bad here. Raced at Sherwood yesterday, near enough bone dry and the bike was clean 😕

I suggest he switches to crochet or darts 🙁

If he doesn't go out in the wet, why has he entered an Enduro in Wales in April?

Just get him out every week whatever the weather.

If you've seen the weather forecast it's all going to Hell in a bucket this week!
Snow in the north, wet with some more wet in the south.
Lovely!
Roll on N Wales and a mud-fest (maybe).
I'm booked in for both the night ride (40km) followed by the day 50km, so 2 of everything will be the order of the day.
One last fling for the Bonty Mud-X's to have some fun I hope.
