I think you mean "laterally stiff, vertically compliant" (one of my personal favourites).
Stoked is an interesting one. I dislike that sort of word usage but I could find no synonym for "stoked" one occasion when I really felt "stoked" Excited / full of adrenaline / happy all at the same time.
