Hi fellow cyclists
Hope you are all staying well.

With lots of time on my hands, I decided to replace the V brakes on my son's Vitus 275V HT to hydraulic disc. The original fork has no disc brake mount, so I have bought a new fork.
My problem now is that Chain Reaction had listed the spec for this bike to have a tapered steerer and a FSA Orbit 57b headset. The steerer is in fact a straight 1 1/8".
The new fork will need a new crown bearing (I prefer not to remove from the old fork). The frame is tapered with i.d of 56mm bottom/ 44mm top.
Any ideas on what headset/lower race that I need?

Thanks, Charlie.

Take a look at the Hope headset guide which should tell you what sort of headset bearing/race you require.

I prefer not to remove from the old fork

Why?

Just use the old crown race if the lower bearing is fine. Why would you not want to take it off?

Just use the old crown race if the lower bearing is fine.

Presumably because the new fork is tapered and it won't fit.

Get a hope HS136 adapter for the fork to take the diameter out to 1.5" and re-use the existing crown race.

Alanf, thank you for the link to the Hope headset chart. That has made it a lot clearer for me.
The fork I bought is a straight steerer and I was being lazy about removing the old crown race. Two days of reading about the different options of fork and headset has fried my brain.
I am an old skool roadie so things like boost/non boost, thru axle, integrated headset, tapered steerer, hydraulic lockout etc were mostly new to me.

Thanks for all the replies.
Hopefully it will all go together well.

As above if the new fork is straight and the old tapered use the old crown race with the hope adaptor. Cheap and easy. If both forks are straight just swap it. Again easiest and cheapest option.

Yep, Id use use the HS136 adapter....Ive used it on a couple of bikes. I also hacksawed a slit in it to make it a split headset reducer crown
