..I just don't get it !
I know I'm probably in the minority here but they just don't appeal ..what is it about them that folks like ?
Don't get me wrong ..if you met me out on the trail I would probably be the first to speak ..I have never been slow in coming forward and enjoy meeting new folks ..but it's just the sheer volume of people in the same place at the same time that puts me off ..one of the main reasons I ride is to get away from the crowds ..
I love riding with mates and have a core group of friends who have been riding together for 10 -15 years ..most of whom are heading off for the Muckletoon event at Langholm next weekend ..but I just can't bring myself to join them ..
Am I the only one to feel like this ?😁
erm... validation?
I do one or two events a year.
By 'validation' I mean these events provide some evidence that I'm not the only lunatic that enjoys riding a mountain bike.
That makes me feel better 😀
They are very handy for getting to know some local trails if you're new to an area / looking for somewhere new.
I did a few Evans Ride It events and they have been enjoyable days out.
They can be busy, but have been round an event and only seen a few folk - it helps if you get out in the first few waves.
Mine are usually for events/distances i wouldn't usually do without the incentive of it being an 'event'.. I've had some cracking times and great chats with others out on these events. It also gives you the ability to push harder than usual.
Many of them you'll get to ride trails that otherwise aren't open to the public. Ard Rock. PMBA Lakes/Graythwaite.
Met some awesome people and had a great time at most events, some pushed me physically, mentally and others were just a great laugh.

Beyond the start and finish most events I've done I've either spent a long time solo out there or with the same small group of people over the course of the day.

I don't do many but this is the main reason.
Beer and music afterwards are the main draw, but then I choose my events fairly selectively 🙂
I don't do road events for similar reasons to those you allude to… I loathe being part of a big group on the road; any more than four people in total and I'm out.
Iknow what you mean, I hardly do any these days- but I used to use them as a reliability ride,a personal challenge& a way to ride in parts of the country I wanted to get to know better. Apart from the Dyfi enduro, because everything about that is/was ace.:-)
Nothing beats the buzz of hammering down an enduro stage, riding it blind, on the edge of your skills, with someone only 20 seconds behind you.
And you get to the bottom, and have a right hoot about it with your pals/fellow enduroists/complete strangers, pedal up a hill and then do it all again.
It's not for everyone.
