MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
This winter I've done a bit of riding at night with a smart 700 on the bars with my Exposure switch filling in with another 300 ish. On the flat its fine but I really need something spotty on my hat for corners and when i speed up a bit down hill
I've seen this which has a good price. But I can't find out much about it. Can you answer any of these
Apart from output what difference with the pro model?
Do you get a helmet mount with this one or the pro? (I did quite alot of googling last night without getting a definitive answer)
Will it be reasonably spotty?
I apologise for such a dull thread. Tyres are way more exciting
Other suggestions welcome
This is one of the problems with Moon lights - they seem to have so many variations, it can be hard to find what you're actually looking at.
On their website they have the Vortex & Vortex Pro 2019 version. The Tweeks one looks like a 2020 going by the graphics on the side, but isn't on the Moon website.
The 2019 versions do come with different accessories; so the Pro comes with handlebar & helmet mount, while the normal one only comes with handlebar mount. I would suspect it would be the same for this years model, but am not sure.
Going on the spec that’s the new vortex - which has very similar output to the previous gen vortex pro which I’ve got.
It’s pretty decent to be honest - I’ve replaced it with an Exposure Axis but so far it seems dimmer than the moon by quite some way (I think I have a faulty one).
IIRC it comes with a bar mount and a basic helmet mount. There is an additional go pro style mount you can buy that I’ve used - you just need the go pro base already to stick to your helmet for the moon mount to attach to.
Thanks folks the plot thickens. I'll phone tweeks later. The pro isn't in stock with them any way
Sigma sport have them listed as well with a description of what comes with the light
I have owned various moon lights over the years. I think they are great for the money. I use a vortex pro on the helmet and it's great. However, I recommended it to a mate recently and he bought the vortex to use as a helmet light and it didn't come with the helmet mount. Best check!
Sigma sports has the answers. Thanks everyone
If you're using it as a helmet light be aware they they're bloody heavy, mine pushes my helmet into my forehead. Mine also only lasted eighteen months before conking out, and the warranty is only one year.
They aren’t that heavy tbh - about the same weight as an Exposure Diablo I think. An exposure joystick would be lighter but a lot more ££££
Mine (I have a vortex and a vortex pro) are both older than yours with no issue
From what can see a vortex pro weighs 120g and a joystick weighs 96g
Yep - the moon is basically the same weight as the Diablo. The joystick is the lightest exposure light and the axis is somewhere in the middle.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the helmet mount. I've got the mount, but use a lump of sugru and a velcro strap instead. The helmet mount only has pretty coarse steps for adjusting the angle, and I invariably found that the angle I wanted was halfway between too notches. It is a fairly tight beam, so quite sensitive to angle.
Plus, the sugru mount means the weight is much closer to your head which makes it much less noticeable, and slightly less likely to get caught on branches.
As above I used the optional gopro mount. It’s rock solid / didn’t cost too much. The light does sit reasonably high off your helmet though.
If id known about sugru i'd be a richer man. But with 300 less lumens in the post
Just got the vortex pro a week ago to replace a 12 year old hope vision 2 (which still works but the battery is old and I wanted USB charging for work). The vortex is nice, light, good crisp beam. Lots of modes. Too many modes and cycling through is a bit of a pain. Came with remote switch and helmet mount. The remote switch is very useful with gloved hands as the switch on the light is tiny. This makes flicking through the modes when you want to get back to full beam a pain. Seems robust enough but only time will tell. Suspect my hope might still outlive it with a new battery.
