MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
which is best or is there an alternative?
try this one. cheapest OS maps i could find. free software, user friendly. good technical support.
Have a look at Anquet too. Regularly wins "best of" type tests.
Thing is, they all work a little differently and you're as well to try them all to see which one "clicks" with you.
Cheers, any experiences gratefully received
My experience (and others are, of course, welcome to disagree)...
I've used TrackLogs v1, v2 and v3. I found v2 a step forward from v1 but really don't like v3. In my view it is clouded with features that I'll never use and as a result I found it frustrating to do the simple stuff I use it for.
I like to:
[*]plot routes on the map[/*]
[*]see what distance/elevation they work out at[/*]
[*]send them to my GPS[/*]
[*]read routes actually done from GPS[/*]
Version 2 does all that and can read v3 maps so that's what I'll stick with.

I have just put this in the classifieds this morning
Another one still using V2 Tracklogs, didn't upgrade to V3 after Hig's comments a few years back.
I also have a slightly hacked copy of Memory map but I don't find it as easy to use?
Routebuddy- you just need to buy the maps once, and you can use them on both your iphone and mac.
😆
In reality though, I think you need to demo the main ones(MM, Tracklogs and Anquet, maybe Fugawi) and try before you buy. I made the mistake of buying into tracklogs a few years back, when it seemed as if everyone on this site was recommending it, without trying it, and really disliked the UI. Memory Map's interface worked far better for me.
I think, like a lot of software these days, that there's too many 'added features' that the average user doesn't want, or need- my requirements are the same as Higgo.
I've always used sites like bikehike etc to plan my routes and print out OS maps with the route marked to take with me, then uploaded to my GPS using free software - does the dosh for MM, Tracklogs etc just get you off-line access to maps or is there something else that makes it worth dusting off the wallet?
I made my investment in Tracklogs and maps before the decent online alternatives. I do use the online stuff for planning runs etc while travelling abroad though.
It may well be just familiarity but I can map things quicker and better on Tracklogs (v2) than on any of the online alternatives.
