Hi All,
Looking at riding round Marple/Hayfield on Sunday morning and just wondered what the trail conditions are like over there. Not fussed on icy or wet but no into soft snow that you end up pushing.
I'm guessing that most will be no worse than round Macc Forest, which is where I've been recently. Looking at The Camp Site, 20 Trees, Middle Moor and Lantern Pike.
Cheers
Carl
Well I'm guessing with the rain over here in Macc thats its going to be slushy and very wet over in Marple too. ๐ฟ
no snow here tonight, it's icy rain
Forget Hayfield, as things are currently.
Heavy snow now, and there was a fair bit up there already.
Sunday things may have changed though.....
Also thinking off going to Hayfield tomorrow morning, so any updates on the conditions today gratefully received ๐
It depends... there's a lot of snow sat on walled trails, Chinley Churn for example, and it's just snowed again. It's still only 4 degrees at street level and the forecast is similar for the tops. I would think really deep, very wet slush over still frozen ground high up today, similar tomorrow though lots of rain would speed up the thawing process.
The stuff round Marple/Mellor would be better. I like the way people think snow just disappears overnight. I reckon it'll be fairly horrid anywhere walled or sunken, less bad on open moorland stuff like Middle Moor.
Good day to go for a run or take a cross bike out on back lane stuff maybe.
Tbh, middle moor/shooting cabins is always boggy & grim, the thaw will make things horrible

That's a bit harsh. It's been a bit sludgy in the past few months thanks to the incessant rain and there's a lot of water erosion damage and lines screwed up by people riding off the track, but generally it's always held up pretty well and rides beautifully in a dry summer and when deep frozen too. Anyway...
True, it is amazing in the dry, one of the best! Could try the snake pass path instead? Just don't hit any sheep..
Thawing rapidly at street level at the moment. There was a lot of snow/sleet/icy rain last night but it's incredible how quickly it's clearing.
I'm just fixing up the CX (wheel bearings knackered) then I'll try going out over Chinley Churn and see what it's like. I suspect very slushy...
Ah well all that sounds promising, going to start at the Roman Lakes end and work over to Hayfield. Will prob nip up 20 Trees and down Middle Moor then back over Lantern Pike to Rowarth on the return leg, with a stop off at The Roman Lakes Cafe for a toastie and a brew.
Cheers all
Don't bother.
The Hayfield side is all unrideable at the moment. Either deep drifts which have part thawed or incredibly slushy, icy snow. I've just been for a 4 mile walk with my bike. Anything even slightly uphill or off camber is largely unrideable. Even the Sett Valley Trail is too slushy to be any good. This was with ice tyres too.
Last weekends fresh powder snow and trodden down trails have all gone.
๐
Nice weekend for a run then ๐
Well it was wet, VERY wet infact, cold on the toes and lots of fun. ๐
Only walked about 100 ydrs out of a 22 mile loop so not what I'd call unrideable, things melt and change fast I suppose.
Anyway had a great ride out, only saw half a dozen or so walkers, weather stayed dry although it was a bit windy up on Middlemoor. Finished of nicely with a brew and toastie as planned at The Roman Lakes Cafe.

how bad can it get round those parts? I dont understand?

10 foot snow drifts, that sort of thing.

Quite a few of the trails are walled on one or both sides or sunken, where that's the case, snow collects on the lee side as it drops out of the wind, or builds up against walls and forms big, localised drifts, so trails like the one across Chinley Churn or the continuation of Highgate Lane towards South Head or the Pennine Bridleway below Lantern Pike get properly blocked, ditto the Robin Hood's Picking Rods bridleway on either side of the notch at the top. Jacob's Ladder too etc.
Snow doesn't just sit where it falls, it blows around and collects against walls, in hollows, on the leeside of hills etc. So there doesn't have to be an enormous amount of snow for it get pretty deep in some places. The fields on the other side of the fence or wall might only have a shallow covering but the track itself could be thigh deep.
Does that help?
Ive been riding up there quite a alot recently. it's fine.
there are no ten foot snow drifts are there though.. 1-2 MAX
