Woman Arrested Over Dead Cyclist In Road

Last Updated 16:46 09/11/2014
A woman has been arrested after a cyclist was found lying dead in the middle of the road.

The 47-year-old woman is being quizzed on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The arrest follows the discovery of a 31-year-old man near to an Esso petrol station on the A24 in Beare Green, Surrey.

Police say a member of the public found the victim, who was riding a mountain bike when he is believed to have been hit by a car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police said.

The A24 was closed between the Beare Green roundabout northbound and Mill Road southbound while officers carried out their investigation.

The suspect is currently in custody helping police with their inquiries.

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101, quoting the reference number P14322368, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

RIP cyclist and condolences to his loved ones.

But FFS. I hope (if guilty) she goes down for a decent stretch inside. No excuses at all for that.

FFS that's tragic.

Was refuelling in that very garage yesterday morning.

Have cycled that stretch of the A24 many times as it's on my doorstep. Don't like it at the best of times and use the 'pavement' sections when possible.

Thoughts with family and friends. I guess sadly there's a strong chance the Surrey Hills has lost one of its regulars 🙁

Drove past there today too, RIP fella. Not trolling in any way but you often see TTs being run on the A24.I know they need a decent stretch of road but I still don't get it, cycling with traffic whistling past your right ear at 70mph is just not pleasant, I avoid it as much as possible.

I've tt'ed that course many times its a fine course, wide, good sight lines and usually fairly quiet when tt's are being held.

Yep RIP fella - like spacemonkey when I've had to cycle it I've tried to keep my time on it as short as possible.
