. . . and the moon on a stick please.
Still searching for something to replace the lovely Uzzi that I can run my Lyriks up front on. Really can't afford any more 'trial and error' builds when the plan was to reduce the Uzzi debt not add to it 🙄 . 456 Summer Season fits the bill best so far but anything else similar out there, 14-15" seat tube max?
This week I have mostly been building up a rather nice Cove Handjob frame but even with the Lyriks at 120mm (and yeah, I realize that perhaps they're not the ideal forks for a HJ) it felt waay too long and high with zero standover clearance, so was stripped right back down again and will be listed on 'you know where' later today. Earlier this month I built up a little Kona DJ frame which again felt like I was perched on top of it.
Bike building is not fun any more. Help me out please.
i like the transition double 3-4 in travel in short its tiny but would be a great do anything bike. ok but not a hardtail....... 🙂
Always fancied one of those Jedi but I think that would end up increasing my debt . . . one day, one day.
Hi Mama
Spent forever looking for a hardtail frame so def sympathise with
Your frustrations! Funnily enough I have a 14" summer season and
A Ti 456 which fit great. Along the way I looked at an XS Cotic BFE,
Orange P7, and Kona Kula - all similar sizing to the On Ones - may
Be worth a look?
MrsBeanZ
Xs hx1?
Tempted by an Evil Sovereign too. What's the b/b height like folks?
Yeah, I'd love a Blender - reckon it'd be a riot. Shame I missed out - Evans had one of those lovely galvanised frames for £199 a couple of weeks ago. Been looking at the Alpine on the Dialled site but I think the seat tube is a tad too high for me (just 4" of seatpost showing on my 15" Uzzi) 😕 Wonder how the Holeshot would handle 130mm up front.
Oooh that Shango looks good.
So what happened to that cute little 456SS?
stanton slackline too costly?
Nukeproof Snap?
Troof??
how slack do you want it mama? and what's it gonna be for?
remember the old DDG shooter? the one Identity also sold (for 3X the price)? those were stupidly slack (for the time), I had one for a v.short while (broke it, entirely my fault tho) I had to reduce my fork to 80mm to bring it in to a reasonable steepness for DJ.
Too Fugly moe like, that thing's a GATE!!too costly?
I've a couple of mates with mythic amp's. They recon there the bees knees, and ride them like possessed demons! I personally recon the head angle looks a tad steep and will stick to my altitude. Great frame shite cable routing!
What the.... 😯
Still searching for something to replace the lovely Uzzi
Thyat you yourself said to me, and I quote:
'It's a keeper'.
😐
Quite why I was stupid enough to believe that, I do not know...
(Walks off shaking head in despair...)
It is a keeper Elf . . . or rather it should be . . . damn pay cuts 😡 . I love it to bits. Wanna buy it? 😛
The little 456? Lovely, lovely little bike . . . but couldn't afford to keep them both. Still there are a couple more in stock if the Uzzi sells . . . just wondering what else there is out there similar. My Uzzi feels slack even with the forks wound down to 140mm, bottom bracket height is super-low even with the forks wound out - pretty damn perfect do-it-all bike . . . at a price. It's gonna be a hard act to follow.
Slackline would be waaay too big for me. I guess my best bet would be a tiny DJ bike but with a super-low b/b so that it's not too jacked up with the Lyriks up front (I need the skill compensation 😕 ).
Nukeproof Snap is on the list but I think ideally I'd like steel. Mythic Amp looks nice.
Wonder how the Holeshot would handle 130mm up front.
I'd imagine the new one would ride well like that. I've got the 'old' model with 120mm forks (running them pretty stiff so probably same ride height as 130mm)
Cheers Sol. Loving the look of the new white Holeshot and numbers on the short frame look spot on for me too.
Oh yea, there's the yeti dj to. No steel to add to the list I'm afraid.
But the 456SS was design for 100mm forks?
And that Chumba looks like a Halfords ladies BSO...
Just get a normal 456/Ti/Carbon.
b r - MemberBut the 456SS was design for 100mm forks?
No it was designed to accept 100-160mm forks and my build absolutely rocked with Lyriks up front. I need something that feels slack at 120ish but capable of handling 140-150 for dh and drops (I need the skill compensation cos I'm a wimp) - standard 456, BFe, LT hardtails just feel too long/steep - trust me I've tried.
Mama; have you eve considered having a custom steel hardtail made for you? With all the features you want?
Or is that a crazy idea? 😕
Your Uzzi is too small, too mental and too spensive for me I'm afraid. 🙁
Bfe too long? Wow.
I'm flogging mine, if anyone wants an xs in Gritstone...
I think it's the angles which make it feel long Toys. Reckon I think too much 😕 .
Elf it'd be perfect for you - spot on for all those stairs in that Lahndahn 😆
BFe's are too long.. it's the length that does it tho Mama, not the angles 😉
Pft. I don't need a full-suss for stairs. I take them with ease on me HT. 😀
Frightened some people yesterday actually. I think they thought I was going to crash and die. One of the women squealed. Not an unusual reaction tbh. 8)
Please don't encourage Mama though, people. It's not funny; her neighbours' childrens' kidneys aren't safe, with her addiction being so serious. 😐
😆
Well it's been relisted for the final time now so if it doesn't sell this week I'll just shut up and ride (gotta be another year's worth of wear in them old ripped jeans 😆 ).
Mama, I will buy you some new jeans.
Please. Those children need their internal organs. 😐
456SS was ideally meant for 130mm forks.
I'm sure it's capable of handling longer forks though 🙂
Have a look at Sanderson or Flow bikes. Tony from Indepentdent had a one off 14" Sanderson Life frame made for Kate (Betts, lodge cycles) and she loves it so much that she sold her FS bike.
The Blitz frame may well be available in 15" and it's real slack with a Pike fitted. Nice steep seat angle too. Makes for a good pedally descender.
Damn, damn, damn, cheers for all the replies folks . . . but I can't let the Uzzi go. Please feel free to ignore any subsequent 'what hardtail for my Lyriks?' posts 🙄 I guess the perfect frame for my Lyriks is sitting right next to me. Now, who wants to buy a lovely pair of well-ventilated jeans . . . one carefuly lady owner 😉
Dmr sidekick with uturn pikes. Lots of fun.
So mama did you build the ss456 up in the end? (sorry if I'm not keeping up 😉 ) just cause that frame stays slack with the forks wound in - and then goes slacktastic when wound out - which sounds like what you want? My similar mission to yours has me on the straight 456 at the moment, but am quite tempted by the Ti version ... and possibly toys19's Xs Bfe 🙂 Did also consider the Dialled Alpine - but was looking at the original versions with the shorter 21" ish IIRC top tube option. Unfortunately I dithered too long when they were being sold off a few years back and the updated versions are all too long.. darn it. No thanks to those jeans 😉
Yes I did ART and I loved it, and yes, your description is spot on. If I have a spare couple of hundred £s in the near future I'd definitely get another but for the time being I just can't bring myself to sell the Uzzi to fund another build on a whim. I tried an XS BFe which pedalled great at 130ish but I found with my forks wound out I was still coming down front-heavy on little drops - whether it was a touch too long or less slack than I'd been used to I don't know but I'm only small so skill compensation seems a lot more useful than weight distribution 😆
lovely pair of well-ventilated jeans
Winter's coming, love. 😐
Incorrigible. She'd be naked before she stopped buying tiny bikes. 😳
Art,
mail me if you are interested in the bfe, I'm about to strip and put it on here/ebay/bikeradar.
Get help.
Ta, toys am trying to resist more bike tinkerage ... mama's problem 😉 how comes you're selling it on now?
Art, much as I love the Bfe, it is a ruddy awesome bike, but I am totally addicted to my covert and the bfe has been comprehensively ignored. There is pressure from elsewhere for the components on it so the frame is going off to ebay..
ragley piglet is supposed to be slack and can handle forks upto 130mm, and looks like they do a 14" frame size?
Oooooh, that Sovereign is nice 😛 . Keep 'em coming folks - if I ever do manage to swap the Uzzi for something a little more 'sensible' (but where's the fun in that 🙄 ) you'll be the first to know.
mama indecisive dirt 😈
my dj bike is tiny, a mondraker quarter II. it comes singlespeed with a 80mm fork but also has a mech tab.
last time i looked freeflow bikes were selling them for @450ish for a complete bike. the kit on there would pretty much recoup that cost.
low bb, really tight back end too. probably not that slack though ive chased a few mates on dh bikes and its the slick tyres rather than the head angle that scared me. a 100-120mm fork would make it a beast!!
My sis has a Kona Kula .. dunno if it's slack enough or takes big enough forks but it's TINY ... she's just starting out on MTBs but finds it very stable so I'm assuming it's quite slack?
Ah yeah, that's the problem isn't it toys, I'm riding my mega at the moment at the expense of all others ...
mama, best not to be seduced by the lovely looks of the Evil - have checked out the geo for ickle people and they are way long and on the heavy side. All this long, slack, low stuff is fine and I'm quite partial myself based on the trajectory of my bike history - but the 'long' bit seems to forget smaller people who even with a diddy stem will have the 'riding a gate I can't manoeuver' problem. Hence Ragleys and those rather lovely looking stantons also being out... tsk....
Hmmmmm, yes the larger Evils look great but the smalls (although only measuring a very short 21.25 actual TT) don't have the extended seat tube and brace so look pretty ordinary. Not bothered about 'heavy' but an extra £200 seems a lot to pay over the Faction for Reynolds main tubes and 140mm fork compatibility.
Brassneck, I've ridden many tiny Konas and yes, they're spot on for little people. Always wanted a Kula but reckon I'd need to swap the Lyriks for something with less travel.
Ooooh Tazzy it does but my legs are crying at the thought of anything longer than half an hour on that. This time last year I bought one of [url=
]these 😛 - built it up into an absolutely cracking little bike which went like a rocket and handled the local d/h track with ease . . . but the day after a few hours' x/c at Cwmcarn I could hardly move 😆 . I reckon it's gonna have to be steel for my old bones now.
Ooh very nice, I've had a hankering for a Holeshot for a while now!
Enjoy the build process and post pics and a ride report when you're done Mama 🙂
Live build avec curry and beer ce soir? It is Friday, after all.
EDIT - too slow...
That looks really really cool. How much does it weigh?
Do you want to sell it? 😆
OK then Rickos . . . bit peckish at the mo' though so I reckon a nice cuppa is in order first . . .
Do you want to sell it?
Not quite yet 😉
Frame feels pretty light weight but I'd guess the final build should be in the region of 28-30lbs (some of the parts are pretty hefty and although the build is crying out for some nice lightweight air forks, I love my Lyriks to much).

remember the old DDG shooter? the one Identity also sold (for 3X the price)? those were stupidly slack (for the time), I had one for a v.short while (broke it, entirely my fault tho) I had to reduce my fork to 80mm to bring it in to a reasonable steepness for DJ.
Bloody hell, you managed to break one of them? How? I tried with mine for years, it's still going strong. When the apocalypse comes, the only survivors will be cockroaches and those Frames of a Thousand Names.
Was disappointed you didn't go with the blender......but when I saw what you brought all is forgiven, you have great taste. if I had the funds (& more time) I'd love a holeshot. Please post another shot once its complete & let us know how she rides!
Will do. Build on hold at the mo' until curry has been consumed but it does feel very very nice as it stands - not too high with the forks at 120mm (although I realise optimum fork length would be much less than this). Tomorrow's gonna be good 😛
Lookin' good 😀 beans on toast and curry ... 😉
Pakas...like I said good taste! Haha
120 should be fine, my blender is ment to be run at 100, 120 max. I run 100 for bmx track, dj, and xc, run 120 for tail ridding and 140 for dh. Love it in all modes 🙂
Mama, buy my Sub-zero, it's perfect for what you want, 15" seattube, too big for me really, but I reckon perfect for you? Looks good with Lyrics up front too 🙂

Drop me an email if you're interested 🙂
EDIT: just realised you've already committed, ah well 😆
Have to say that is one sweet looking bike.
Lush....
There you go - pic 'au naturale' . . .
Just got back from a couple of hours in Wentwood forest and got the first crash out of the way . . .
note to self: you cannot ride a hardtail downhill at the same speeds as the Uzzi
. . . does bounce very nicely though 😉
Super-nippy on the climbs and in the twisty stuff and doesn't feel slack (to me) at 120mm at all . . . DH at 140mm then wound them out a tad more for the steeper stuff. May need to ditch my much-loved plastic pedals for something a little more aggressive for the Winter though - that back end is rather, shall we say, lively, after being used to 7" of squish. Love it - pretty damn perfect do-it-all bike for tiny folk 😛
loving the look of that,i reckon ive been lusting to own /ride a slack big forked hardtail for a couple yrs now.think i just need to scratch that itch,
perfect for winter mini d/h tracks
Yep that looks so good it makes me want to go out tomorrow on my Dialled Alpine. Would quite like one of those 'steel is real' decals.
What on Earth has she gone and done now.....
Ooh, it does look very cute though dun't it? Like a baby bike! 🙂
It is indeed very tiny - seat tube is a touch under 13" - I have finally found the meaning of the word 'chuckable' that you bigger folks seem to use so much 8) . . . although earlier it seemed that the Holeshot was doing most of the chucking 😆
Ok Mama - what Dialled model is your new frame and what size please? Doesn't look like anything available on the Dialled site.
Love small bikes and your latest looks fantastic!
Cheers! It's a Holeshot. Only available in two different top tube lengths - mine is the shorter of the two at 21.4 (centre to centre). I'm just 5'2" hence it's the perfect frame for my do-it-all build.
Thanks - enyoy it!
Now, who wants to buy a lovely pair of well-ventilated jeans . . . one carefuly lady owner
Maybe not the right forum - 😀 or then again it could be
The DB - looks great -I always wanted a love/hate - but love the wanga it would be replacing !!!
As ever, mamadirt, an(other) impeccably put together little bicycle. Props! 😉
Ha! I was going to suggest a dialled holeshot, but thought it wouldn't like the lyrics - looks great in white...
This one lasted a while! http://www.southerndownhill.com/forum/index.php/topic,255698.0.html 😀
The above combined with http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/fs-new-commencal-saddle-and-316mm-alienation-pivotal-seatpost makes me take a wild guess that mamadirt has gone for a bouncy frame again in the form of a commencal absolut sx (post and saddle oe on these frames)?
Apologies but i'm bored and i love the weekly mamadirt build threads, they make my frame swapping habit seem quite reserved!
