Not been for four years. It's one hour from my door. Minton Batch is right up there with my favourite natural singletrack. And the views.. staggering. Want to go back tomorrow.

So much more to go and ride. And we shall be 🙂

Last three weekends have been Wales (wet), Quantocks (dusty) and Long Mynd (just Awesome). I don't want summer to end.

Looks great. We were there about 10 days ago and it was more like water skiing than riding. It absolutely binned it down, nothing to see but clouds. Must go back on a decent day!

Good fun day out on the Mynd, lots of climbing = lots of descending! 😉

Lovely today. Headwind on the tops seemed to be in our faces all day long but small price to pay for sunshine. Bits of mud under the trees but descents were all superb. It's a lot wilder than the Malverns. Sort of like a mini-Wales really.

Last three weekends we've done 1000m+ climbing and descending. Malverns are pretty steep so I'm used to it but legs toast today. Not sure I could have made another climb after three monsters!

I've yet to experience the Mynd in the dry but it's on my wish list. Looks like today would have been ideal.

🙂 same for me with the quantocks last week. Never been in the dry as far as I can remember. Bike came back dusty! Still Wales the week before was about the wettest ride I've ever done!

How bad an idea would going on a singlespeed be? My only geared mtb is a dh bike, the light hardtail is ss! I can't remember the steepness of the climbs -I'm usually ok on ss if its long and steady but steep kills my legs.

Hmm. I;m sure it could be done but I ride most of the Malverns in the top ring on a 2x10 on a 29er, but used my granny ring A LOT today. Mate on a single ring (34 front) found it tough in places. So might be doable but not by me!

Hmm I've never been the mynd riding but I might try and get over there soon, on a dog free weekend of course.

Rode there recently for the first time. Really enjoyed it and Minton Batch is great, fast, flowing singletrack with a few surprises. Some very steep sections of climb though, gears highly recommended!

I remember struggling with 1x9 when I was there before but both me and my bike were a lot heavier and I was a lot less fit!

Shop's great. We all spent some money in there this morning. Cafe is good too. And the pub next door has lovely beer. Anyway I digress, you can park at the shop and head up the road, finish about 2k (bottom of the batch) away on return.

We used the What MTB route: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/wmb151-long-mynd-classic which is great, but we went a bit off piste and found some stuff we'd really like to come down next time including one of the descents on the Singetrack Route (I think another mate did it last week and it was even more of a monster)

glad you had a good time OP - meanwhile to balance things out, I had driven up from the chilterns for the weekend but found out on saturdays ride that I had forgotten to tighten my chainring bolts & two had fallen out 😳 no access to internet & no idea where local bike shops were meant me & fannygirl had to resort to walking today only to discover mid 4hr walk that Wenlock Edge pub was shut 🙁 oh & my camelback bladder split & gave me a wet arse too 👿

I was there yesterday too. Only saw 6 other bikers, despite covering 30 miles on the Ride UK bridleways and doing a lap of Eastridge. Bits of it feel very untrodden.

Gears are definitely recommended, certainly on the route we did.

Looks ace! Must go back sometime, when I rode there with some mates from Uni it was an utter mudfest- one of those rides you have to laugh or you'd just cower under a tree sobbing 😆

Cheers,
Jamie

Be sure "not" to descend Townbrook Hollow. Better than Minton, but sadly not a right of way 😉

If you go to the cattle grid at bottom of the Burway (take the path up to the road out of Carding Mill car park), pick up the path on t'other side of the road, follow it round into the bottom of Townbrook. Check OS map for directions into the top, but it is vaguely signposted from the road on top of the Mynd.

I've not ridden the Mynd for a couple of years. I used to love the very fast Pole Cottage descent, and there used to be some great little dh runs in the trees at the top of the climb from Priors Holt.

I've always been intrigued by Ashes Hollow, sadly it's not legal, but has anyone ever 'accidentally' gone down that way? It looks like the longest descent on the hill to me.

Its a terrible shame to walk a bike down Ashes Hollow in the evening or early morning, most of it 'seems ' rideable with some tricky trialsy rock / stream bits.

How do you spot ashes hollow? I'm going for a walk early tomorrow am. I remember riding up along the long road passed/through the gliding club/passed the start of minton- is Ashes at the start of the steep road/downhill that winds down?

HANG ON- POOK to the forum. I think we've ridden it.

We got lost and I ended up riding down a steep drop/steep face down from the middle of a golf course that goes through alot of thorn bushes. I think we turned up it again to gain height after we were totally lost.

hora - dig out the vid on my vimeo. I'm on my phone in a meeting so can't look just yet.

streetmap has a great search function now too that would find it

edit: we didn't ride it. Could've done with a final shuttle up....

It is a great walk.

Get on top of the Mynd and onto the Jack Mytton Way. Proceed to the trig point. From the trig point there is a stony doubletrack. Follow this doubletrack to the road. Turn right onto the road and on your right shortly you will see a stone wall. At this point look for a 'rabbit' type path on your left and follow it as it twists through the undergrowth. Simply continue to walk down and you will go through Ashes Hollow.

It was signposted 'no bicycles'. Sure its that/right one as as soon as you near the stream it becomes a wee bit gnarly but becomes easy after.

I've also found a better campsite at the foot of it. The climb back up the grassy bridleway was hideous.

There are two adjacent valleys that lead to Ashes Hollow. One has the sign you mention, the other doesn't - which is the one I usually use. As you were walking it doesn't matter anyway! Both lead down to Ashes Hollow and follow through to the renovated cottage on the left and into the campsite you mention. There are some lovely gnarly bits to it but I think about 98% is walkable.

I hope you enjoyed it. If you don't fancy accompanying a too fat and currently too slow climbing knacker I will happily show you around.

J

Didnt see a soul either way. It was wet though :O

I did. Marshbrook-up through forest (lots of trails in there I noticed). Through glider club. Along road-Hollow, up bridleway then down Minton Batch

'Also if you need any route info pop in to the shop at Marshbrook, were always willing to give advice on the best route and plenty of parking, showers, cafe, pub, camping, bike shop, hire, demo, etc... down here'

Based on my first visit to your shop I'd have to agree...based on my 2nd visit about 10 days ago I'd have to disagree with the 'were always willing to give advice on the best...'. Bald headed chap on the counter there was hardly helpful even though I was in a position to spend some money.
Still at least the riding around the LM is fantastic

I used to work on the paths on the Mynd and know a few of the descents. Once spent ages trying to get a burnt out car out of Townbrook Hollow. Good luck in getting round the stupid non access laws down there.

I only know it from walking and skiing, but Beacon Hill in Radnorshire (not far from the Mynd) may be worth a look. It has a very Mynd feel and some similar but not so spectacular batches
