Unless you've got a silly amount of luggage, then you should be able to ride from Richmond to South Ken. It's only a few flat miles. Actually quite a pleasant ride, too, if you follow the River. Nice little warm up for your tri....

I was going to ride but the wife and kids are coming and it would be nice to all travel together...

Oh.

You'll be fine on the District Line, as long as it's not at peak times. I've gone from Bromley By Bow in the east, all the way to Richmond on a Sunday, and it's no problem at all.

Will be fine, Richmond is end of the line so you get to choose your spot on an empty train.
Coming back may be worse as the train will be pretty full by the time it gets to S Ken.....
