Is it a big no no?
My rubber grips started to work loose today, but l put it down to the torrential conditions at glentress. Got me thinking I fancy some lock on grips, but would I need to switch to alloy bars?
Depends on the bars and the grips. Frinstance Easton say fine, with most of theirs (but IIRC recommend against barends on the Monkeylite SL). But, that's for clampy lock-ons rather than grub-screw lockons.
I've run them without issues, i'm also running them now on carbon bars... THat doesn't mean it's a good idea... but it's not killed me yet.
lock ons for me on ragley wiser bars.. ace
Locks On Grips on Easton Monkey Lite XC for the last five years with no problems at all.
Been using lock-ons with truvativ noir and Easton carbon bars for several years now with no problems. Using a little carbon paste prevents resorting to over tightening the rings if they're slipping.
I'd never clamp anything to my carbon bar. I just ride around without gears or brakes.
and hold onto your stem just to be on the safe side
But not too hard, in case you squash it
so its Ok then? sarcastic comments aside, its a genuine concern, the lock ons need to resist and outward force, shifters, breaklevers dont need to resist much force at all.
I have FSA K Force carbon risers, but cant find any info if you can run lock ons with them. I think you cant run bar ends.
There are 2 types of lock on(probably more), some have a grub screw that tightens a pad onto the bar, they are no good on carbon, the others, the screw just tightens a clamp (like a seatclamp) around the bar (ODI type), these are normally fine.
normally
still not filling me with confidence ๐
Well, I have had umpteen sets of grips on my carbon USE bars since 2004 many, many trail centre days, 2 trips to the Alps, plus regular local loops, and I dont always run the best quality grips either.
Is that more like it?
Come to think about it, been pretty good bars them ๐
Carbon and lockons are fine.
I'd be more worried about non lock ons with any kind of bar, carbon or ally
