Looking for a hydration pack that can hold a 3 litre bladder and enough storage for a long ride... so tools, extra layer, food etc. Don't need anything massive, already have a dhb Elsted 30 which is fab but too big for what I need it for. Something the size of a Camelbak MULE, but lighter.

Currently looking at...

Deuter Speedlite - But not sure if you can fit a 3 litre bladder in?
Salomon XA10 - Looks great, but not seen one in the flesh.
Camelbak Octane 20 - Again, not seen one, but could be a bit big. Nice and light though, does anyone have one?

OMM do a thing which weighs absolutely nothing. Not sure it's asbig as you want though.

Just go for a poo before you go out and get a Dakine Nomad. You will be lighter and have a quality 3l hydration pack.

go for a poo before you go out

Let's assume he's done that. If he also has a really light hydration pack he'll be even lighter. 🙄

Why do people need a 3L bladder? Are you really doing full days out in the hills with nowhere to get water? I'd think carefully about that one before wondering about shaving a couple of hundred grams off the weight of the pack you're putting it in.

I have an old mule and i'm thinking i need something a bit bigger as i have to store my base layer and jacket on the outside meaning they get covered in mud before i get to use them

Camelback Blowfish is well worth a look, as it expands. A very useful thing for longer rides as and when needed.

Also- remember the Karrimor Rush Air from a few years ago. Lightweight and roomy. Apparantly designed for endurance sports.

Ive got the Camelbak Octane 8+ and think it's great. 2L bladder and opens up to take as much gear as I need for a full day out(seems to hold more than it states). Then zips and compresses up to quite a small short blast pack. Seems tough and very well made and sits very securely when on. Go Outdoors had them for £44 when I was last in.

Cheers
Rich

in my opinion wingnuts are amazing, plenty of room, nice and light and very stable on your back even when full. i'm not sure they're available in the uk at the moment though...

Yes, long rides, 6-18hrs. Need to keep stops to a minimum and taps/water not always available.

Wingnuts look interesting, but not suitable for what I need.
Blowfish is heavy compared to the others I'm looking at.

Really? Where on earth are you riding?

Rural mid-wales mostly, but also other places where I don't know where water is available.

Not interested in Wingnuts.

Anyone with a Deuter speedlite able to tell me if a 3 litre bladder would fit?

Bargain here

I got one and found it very similar to the blowfish

Also when your spouse looses the cap off your camelbak bladder they will send out a replacement free of charge which avoids domestic incidents.

Decathlon Diosaz - I have a Raid 17, and have now used it for 4+ years. Great bit of light kit that keeps going, but chuck away the useless bite valve it comes with. Choose your size:

matt look at what inov8 have to offer

did a fell running and mtb event sponsored by them at the start of the year and their kit although designed for running looks the mutts nuts and like it would cross over real well - real light nylon pack and low down bladder like wing nuts

I have a Blowfish which is ideal as stated because it expands. I'm not really weight conscious. However if weight is the real deciding factor, I think the OMM packs are what you are after.

Had a good look at those, but the bladder is only 2 litres, even in the big packs. Your limted to thier bladders then as well. Otherwise exactly what I am after.

Kriega?

3L bladder but doesn't have 10million pockets and stuff so light (the quad system is v comfy too). You can then fit the optional phone/5L/10L packs onto it within 20 seconds with the buckles.

May I suggest an Osprey pack - something like the Talon 22? They don't come with a hydration pack of your choice? Light, very comfortable, and has some very useful features; zipped compartments on the belt, very adjustable - and they come in different sizes. Both my packs are Osprey; have the smaller Talon 5.5 too.

Actually you can put a "normal" bladder in as well in the "sitmat" pocket in the back - don't know if you'd get a 3L in, but even with just a 2L that's 4L total for those epic trips through the mid wales desert.

I'll give them another look if that is the case.

Alpkit Gourdon 20 can take a 3litre bladder, weighs nowt and cost me £17.50.
Waterproof too 😀

Used to buy a new Lowe Alpine Flywheel every couple of years until I read about the Alpkit stuff on here.

I was impressed with the latest Mule..holds 3 ltrs of water, Evo pads knee and elbow, first aid kit, big pump and tool kit along with waterproof and odds and sods. A little weighty but not excessive. Much bigger than my previous original Mule. For big trips I use a Havoc which is much heavier and doesn't hold much more than the Mule..normally hard shell pads instead of Evos

The Wingnut is actually spot on for what you're describing, but if you don't want one, you don't want one. A little bird tells me that they're about to start selling them in the UK again very soon btw.
