It's not about...

[Closed] It's not about the bike . . . but which one for off road touring?

Proper first world problem.

I fancy some off road touring, I'm strangely drawn to off-road drop bars, I might want to tow a trailer/mount a rack, I'm happy with 29er (since 2006).
I've been playing with a prototype On One Adventure bike but I'm too tall for it (shiggy is about 2" shorter than me) and I can't run gears on it because there aren't any of the right swapouts available. Also it's a bit more CX than MTB and there's not enough clearance for 'normal' 29er tyres.

So, Salsa Fargo (kicking myself for not buying STATO's last year); Gryphon; Peregrine; Ogre (not specifically drop bar but it can be done I think) which has very useful dropouts - does anything else have trailer mounts like that?; or what?

Any advice welcome. I know there have been a few threads like this recently but I can't seem to get all the info in my head!

Thanks.

I've been running an early rigid forked On-one 29er as a road/tour/off-road bike for several years. Slotted dropouts, long 3x9 gearing and a flat bar with bar ends hanging off a flipped stem work fine and fit me; I've often run it with a trailer loaded with several days worth of gear held in place by a conventional trailer axle QR. Rims and frame will take anything from a 28mm road slick to proper fat off-road rubber. Decent sized discs cope best with the extra loading from a trailer. One minor drawback is the lack of a rack mount on the seat-stay bridge, but that's it. Reasonable weight and tough as old boots; it works for me.

I'm not hugely experienced (if at all) but the Fargo seems the ideal candidate, I don't know about the Singulars, and I would be checked tubing gauge and rack mounts if I was planning to run 4 panniers off road.

i nearly bought a Fargo last year but am glad not to have as i wanted the option to run SS if possible. So now i am able to fund my dream, i've ordered a Genesis Fortitude Adventure frame set and plan to run it with drops, not sure on the drop of choice yet as i have a few options to play with.

The bike will be used as my only mtb abd also for the offroad tours i have planned, i also have a geared road tourer. It will have a combination of these 3 set ups, trailer, rack and panniers or just a bar bag and big saddle bag.

i'm really excited and will let you know how it all pans out if your keen?

I liked my Peregrine when I had it, it got sold to someone who was going touring onit.

Fortitude Adventure looks brilliant. And I know John in Hexham Bike Shop would love an excuse to order one in for you...

I guess it depends how "off-road" you'replanning on going, to an extent.

How did I miss that Fortitude? I'd be very interested to know how that goes with drop bars please. You can only run hub gears though?

I toured a bit last year with my Scandal (sample) frame but it's nazi SS so needs a gear hanger to run gears and doesn't have anywhere to mount a rack or trailer on (although I did manage) I could get a steel Inbred 29er again I guess and run drops with a stack of spacers.

I'm thinking 'proper' off road, though not especially technical, ie more than sustrans but not the Nan Bield. Crossing Scotland, that kind of thing ๐Ÿ™‚

It's a shame that the Fortitude Adventure can't run gears. I think they've missed a trick with that.

I read somewhere the reasoning behind not having an EBB but even to have a hanger there like an Inbred would be helpful wouldn't it?

Yup, "Adventure" and no derailleur hanger do not go together IMO.

There is a geared version for racing I think. Neither meant for drops.

Surely it wouldn't be that hard for them to do, they already produce the Race version with a gear hanger.

Couldn't they just produce an Adventure with the Race dropouts?

I just bought a singular peregrine with onroad /offroad touring in mind and i have to say that i am well unimpressed with it . the idea was to replace my road tourer ( older claude butler ) and off road bike (inbred ) with one bike to rule them all , the peregrine seems to lack oomph and feels heavier than it should it was built up with full new xt groupset and two sets of wheels one pair factory (xtr) and one pair handbuilt (chris king hubs mavic open pro rims ) . i am now reconsidering a pugsley which was going to be my first choice, one problem was because i am short in the arse i had to buy a small which comes in 26 not 29 er ho hum live and learn

amplebrew - "simple" to do, but it's mass-production, so is there the demand, does it fit in with their line-up etc...?

Sorry to hear that al, maybe I could relieve you of your frame? ๐Ÿ˜‰

You'd think that they were making it harder for themselves by offering different Fortitude frames. They could just make one frame with slider dropouts that can take racks.

On One did that with the Scandal 29er and got slagged off for having rack mounts by those that didn't need them and thought they spoiled the bike ๐Ÿ™‚

Maybe they might produce a geared Adventure at some point; would be great if they did. I very nearly bought an Adventure, but my lack of knowledge and experience of the Alfine system put me off.

There was also a comment in another similar thread about an Adventure rider not being too impressed with the Alfine gear change.

You won't go far wrong with a Fargo. Great bikes, i love mine (XXL).

Comfiest bike ever and rides beautifully.

Shame mine only ever does the commute when it should be touring the world.....

Really can not fault the fargo for off/on road touring action and general dicking about on. I run mine with 105 STIs and 46cm salsa bell lap bars which are also brilliant, I have tried midges and the dropped section was a bit too short for my hands.
