can anyone tell me why my right knee is aching after riding? a bit of history:

i used to only get this ache from wearing steel toe-cap boots - they seemed to twist my leg an angle they weren't happy with. i don't wear these boots much so no worries. then one day, a friend of my came up for the weekend (easter this year) - we went to innerleithen and glentress on the saturday, and that's when the problems began (knee pain from riding). i was riding really hard for me, though i was running a bike i've had for five years, with shoes i've had for ten (never adjusted the cleats) so what is it? now i get pain from most rides including the gentle commute. my ten year old shoes died recently so took to wearing my shimano shoes, but the problem remains - i've even realigned the cleat so i'm not constantly riding with my foot about to disengage (i.e. it's got float in both directions). pedals are shimano set up pretty loose.

i'm fearful of an operation! help!

As above - pain at the side of the knee is often associated with ligament damage, but the fastest way to recovery is an appointment with the gp, followed by physio etc if necessary.

ian, it's on the outside of the knee. it's an ache so a bit hard to tell the location, but seems to be at/just below that bone that sticks out. i suspect it's skeletal just from the feel but really have no idea.

standard practice = RICE.

rest
ice
compression
elevation

try hot and cold treatment always finishing with cold.

It sounds (to my layman ears) like ITBS (iliotibial band syndrome) - more common in runners, but still a problem for cyclists. Have a google and see if the symptoms match.

Treatment as above (RICE*) - prevention seems to be more stretching of quads and hips and strenghting/stability exercises (lunges etc)

* Although when my brother had a bad case during lots of tri training he was told off by his physio for stopping running.

the knee is the most complex joint in body, GP will only refer you to an NHS physio, you'll probably wait ages for them to say stop cycling, pay and go private

a few observations:

"steel toe-cap boots - they seemed to twist my leg an angle they weren't happy with" maybe you riding shoes are doing this as "with shoes i've had for ten (never adjusted the cleats)", plus it sounds like they wern't set up properly as "i've even realigned the cleat so i'm not constantly riding with my foot about to disengage". I know you've "recently" changed shoes but a chronic injury will be a bitch to shake off.

Time are apparently knee friendly

If you got some ££$$££ then check out http://www.cyclefit.co.uk/who_are_cyclefit.html

sounds like a ligament strain to me but you need proper diagnosis

thanks everyone. ITBS might be it, and http://www.itbs.info/ seems like a good start. i'll still go for the gp i think. not really got the money for private or cyclefit (i'm in scotland as well). looks like rest is what i need, which means that multiday trip will have to wait :'(

If you're in the central belt of Scotland, and your doctor recommends physio, then you could book yourself in for some appointments at the Sports Injury Clinic at Hampden.

I was last there about 3 years ago, but the appointments were only about £25 a time, and they will be able to give you some expert guidance about how to resolve your current problem and how to minimise the change of it recurring.

I would strongly recommend spending the money to get your knees sorted properly, or you may find yourself off the bike for a lot longer!!

dj - i drove past there yesterday! thanks for the tip. yeah, sure i don't wanna be off the bike for any longer than possible. it's just this came at the worst time, financially speaking! 🙁 but £25 seems like not too bad to me 🙂
