MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Historically I've always kept on top of drivetrain maintenance and very rarely have everything go at once, however this bike has been sat on a trainer for 3 years and has done around 10K miles in that time - with nothing more than a bit of lube every so often.
It is my better halfs and whilst it isn't slipping, it was getting a bit noisy and prompted a look over this morning. With the cost and availability of components nowadays, thought I'd ask for a second opinion before replacing chainrings, cassette and chain in one go.
At first I thought just the chainrings look iffy as the chain reads ok on the Park gauge. Then I played some more and found the gauge goes into the 0.75 if pushed although it is a fight to get it back out. The cassette looked like new after a clean but the spacing between points looks a little long.
As now, I've concluded it's all in the skip, which sort of helps as at first I was wondering why only chainrings would wear before everything else.
She is going to be using it outside for 100M rides and a couple of 70.2 triathlons this year, so I guess I know the answer already !

Is it jumping or skipping?
I think all those chain stretch checkers are just made by Big Chain. I'd just keep riding it until it stops working.
Or for a fee, I will dispose of it for you in an environmentally responsible way.
I'd say goosed, if you just replace a fee bits it's not going to mesh very well with the old stuff and more than likely will have issues.
Availability is much bette than it was and as long as you're flexible you'll get hold of stuff easily enough.
I'd wax the chain and run it all into the ground - it's not as though a terminal failure will leave her stranded miles from home
(Edit - cleverly, I ignored the bit about long rides outside)
Given what your using it for ....is a dnf worth the couple hundred quid in parts ?
If it was recreational use where the stakes are lower it's got alot more to give.
2 replies, 2 opposite ends of the thought process 🤣🤣
Don’t want to run it into the ground if there are clear wear indicators shown in the pics.
If it were my mtb then fair enough but with what is planned for this bike, it needs to be sound. Just answered my own question again. 😂
yeah - I agree now I've seen the long rides/triathlon stuff.
Me, I'd still keep it and put it back on over next winter 😳
Put a new chain on now and find out if the cassette and rings are ok.
She is going to be using it outside for 100M rides and a couple of 70.2 triathlons this year
If it was just indoors, I ride it into dust, but for this, it's shot.
Thanks guys.
Went with all new in the end, dropping to a 105 cassette from Ultegra as I can't see £30 difference.
Must now remember to throw the old bits away instead of keeping them in the garage for a N+1 beater bike build that will never happen.
The chain ring teeth look ok to me, I've seen far worse!
If you have new chain you can check for chain ring wear very easily by just wrapping the new chain round it and seeing how much separation you get when you pull a link away from the chain ring.
My winter bike chain set is looking a lot more worn and I'd happily ride 100 miles on it.
