Can You use and 9 speed rear mech on a 8 speed system

Yes. Shadow or not works fine. I'm running an lx non shadow with 8 speed drivetrain and have been for some time.
Don't think 10 speed shadow+ is compatible though.

I've used Shimano XT w/8 speed for about the last 10 years. Both M750 and M772 Shadow have worked just fine.
Edit - Thinking of going 2x 10 though...

Yup. The indexing is in the shifter not the mech.
