Is Shimano CUES 9 speed cassette compatible with older 9 speed parts?

My hack bike (30 year old Rockhopper) needs new drivetrain and I'm planning to change from 3x8 to 1x9.
I have an old XT mech, shifter and new 9 speed chain in the parts box but need a cassette.
Does anyone know whether a CUES 9 speed work or would that need an CUES chain and new mech as well? NB other option is microshift cassette with similar ratios.

I don't think they are. AFAIK the sprocket spacing for 9, 10, and 11 speed CUES is the same. That means that you won't be able to use old 9-speed shifters and derailleurs with a CUES cassette.

A cheap steel cassette will last for years and will be compatible with your existing parts.

Thanks thols that was the bit that wasn't clear from reviews I'd read. Will likely get a microshift 11-42. I have a range extending link for the large gear.

CUES is all 11 speed spacing and pull regardless of the number of cogs on the back.
