So I'm setting up a bike for my sister, XT front mech, deore 3 speed shifters. I set it up just as normal but them I go for the big ring and it's like i'm hitting some resistance, pulling the cable makes no difference.

I checked to see if the mech is catching on the ring but its clear and i've turned the H limit screw and that makes no difference.

What am I missing?

mech designed for a double?

what length axle if it's not HT2?

can you move it to the right place by pulling the cable?

Triple mech as far as I know, 68shell with two spacers on the drive side. XT triple chainset HT2.

Tried pulling the cable and it just won't budge.

If it were me I'd pull the cable so the mech was against the stop and then try adjusting the H/L screws and see if I felt resistance in the cable as I did it.

Mech position, not catching a chainring or not leaving enough space for the chain? I've never got my XT mech sweet on my Stumpjumper, the LX it replaced just seemed to work better.

Gear shifter in middle ring position instead of small when initially hooking up cable to mech?

Sorry mate, I ended up working away without any net access. I'll stick it in the stand again tomorrow and try all of your suggestions... and provide an update!

Cheers

Fixed it. 😳

When fitting the cable it has a slot to the left of the screw. It's a pretty fine channel so it looks like it'll fall out. So with the bolt there's a shaped washer the folds round to the back offset to the slot.

I figured this piece was to pinch the cable and make sure it stayed in the groove but it's not. The way I had it fitted means that it interferes with the clamp as it goes for the top ring.

Washer moved, full range, works perfectly!

A testament to if something's not working, take a bit of time out and come back with fresh eyes!

Cheers all.
