How do you attach stuff (e.g. small drybags) to your forks for bikepacking? I'm worried that if I just strap them on they'll end up in my spokes at an inopportune moment. The Salsa Anything cage seems like a great idea if you've got the right forks, or jubilee clip them on, but they're not all that cheap if you buy two of them, and seem to crack (?). Are there any alternatives, either proper or suitably bodged?

Cheers

What kind of fork are we talking about? Does it has mudguard eyelets for example?

I wouldn't put anything on suspension forks, if that's what you are talking about.

They're Kona Project 2s. I'm using them with discs, so the canti mounts are free, and I think they have mudguard eyelets.

Little front rack on the canti studs?
Something like this maybe ?

PII's are pretty strong forks, tho' too much weight on the front will slow your steering (PII's don't have too much trail - which isn't a criticism btw - they are thoroughly decent forks, but they aren't 'touring' forks, (which have a longer trail to compensate).

I'd like to hope that the cracking anything-cages should be sorted now (on new stock versions of course), there's been a fair bit of coverage about this online, and I can't imagine Salsa not doing anything about it (would they?).

... an' I say 'I'd like to hope', as I'll be ordering one in the next few weeks. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yep, had the P2s for quite a while now and they are doing well! I've seen lots of pictures of bikepacking setups with a bit of kit on either fork leg, and it seems like a good way to add a bit of extra capacity for lightweight gear. I'm thinking a thermarest one side and something equivalently sized/weight on the other so hopefully not enough to cause any steering problems.

Are you going to be using the anything cages on Salsa forks?

Really? As in bolts half way between the dropouts and the canti bosses? Or do you mean the mudguard eyelets at the dropouts? Don't most front racks need the first of those?

I was hoping to do without a rack if possible. But maybe it's the way to go anyway...

I am.
I've got a set of Enablers on my Swift, so the cage(s)'ll go there.

I'm also tempted to stick one in on the normal bottle mounts on my old SS Kona, (so I can just take a flask of tea with me out when I'm poking around in the back-lanes for a bit - it'll be quicker / less conspicuous than using my trangia for a brew).

I have a set of PII's with rack mounts part-way down the leg - I think they were off a Dr Dew, or some other kinda Kona 'city-bike'.

My 29er versions don't have any mountings tho', so it appears some do, some don't ... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, but I'll have to add as a caveat they are the 700c ones from my Dew... so might not be the same as yours ๐Ÿ™‚
