Can I run a 10 speed chainset with a 9 speed set up ? I am assuming no. But hey, what do I know ??

have run that set up with no probs for a while.
(Sram 10 double chainset, shimano 9 chain & rear mech)

What about 9 speed shifters on a 10 speed cassette? Anyone tried it?

9 speed shifters won't work with 10 cassette, but 10 speed shimano shifters will work with a 9 speed derailier on a 10 speed block. See Sheldon browns 'alternative cable routing' works perfectly
