Never having taken part in one, I have decided to have a bash at the first round of the Scottish cyclo x series.

I understand its an hour at maximum heart rate so I know it will be a work out! I am a roadie. I have been on my MTB once this year. I dont like it getting dirty, ha! So it will be an experience/Ive got plenty miles in my legs though. Anyway, looking for pointers in terms of protocol and kit to use/take from those more experienced than me.

Cheers

Do you race your roadbike? coz it's about as intense as a circuit based crit.
My own league isn't at all snobbish about bikes and kit, we get a fair few MTBs.
I would say it pays to know what you can and cant do on your bike.
But the big thing is knowing when to either cyclo or cross. Mountainbikers tend to ride all the climbs, often pootling up a short climb in the granny whilst cross riders will run past them.
Though I have seen MTBers start to make time on cross bikes that have clogged up with mud and leaves.

Ah, no! It is just something Ive always fancied a go at. At the start I take it the MTB's linger about at the back?

No you'll get some good xc racers out front.
See a cross bike in it's home environment is a flippin fast thing. If a course pushes the boundry then an MTB can have a serious pop.

Glad you've posted this as I'm in the same boat.

Mate has persuaded me to do a cross race, but it will be on my MTB hardtail as dont own cross bike.

Advice on tyres/ tactics etc sought.

Are MTBs significantly disadvantaged relative to cross bikes? Will I be better off trying to borrow a crosser?
