Not something I'd be wanting to shim personally.

Either buy an O/S bar, or a standard stem.

Its only for the commuter. I've got some old flat bars which I really like and a new OS stem on a new bike.

EBC and Petra cycles seem to stock them.

They asked for ideas, they've been given at least two!

Cut up some coke cans and make your own. Or wedge the gap with leaves and twigs.

Well, DMR wingbars, the MX style ones with a crossbrace come as standard with a shim to fit a standard MTB 25.4mm stem (the tube dia is sub 25.4mm) I ran them for years on my MTB without any problem so shimming isnt actually a problem, if you can find the correct size shim then go for it.

As your running flat bars you wont have much twisting force either, just go for it...

remeber this shim wont fit, but just to show the principle is sound.

DMR Wing Bar Cro-Mo 2007

Features:
• Bombproof 4130 Cro.Mo Steeel Riser Bar.
• Welded cross-bar design for heavier riding styles including, jumping, trails, downhill, BSX ect.
• Wingbars come with a shim so can be used with burly BMX stems 22.2mm or standard MTB stems 25.4mm

Do you understand how they work?

Yes thanks - I don't care if it's irrational, it just wouldn't fill me with confidence. Though on a commuter I might not be too bothered.

The Jones H-Bars come with a 25.4-31.8 shim, though that's probably not the cheapest way of getting one... Biff of The Outcast was selling them separately a while back, not sure if he still is, could be worth dropping him a line. I think I may even have one in the shed which is not being used. They are nicely made and are safer and stronger than using a 25.4 bar in a 25.4 stem as the load is more broadly distributed (which is the reason Jones started making them) so no worries there.

Easton make one - available from Extra Uk through your lbs. Costs about six quid iirc.

I've run the same shim, no problems. Ignore the risk-averse.
