We are buying a new house and it has a pretty small garden so looking for a small shed for bikes and tools. I am no DIY superstar so no chance of making one from scratch, but a kit would be fine. Will need to be pretty secure too. Oh and currently got 2 bikes, Mrs P will want one soon so big enough for 3-4 bikes
Thoughts please?
8 foot by six foot should be large enough for your needs, type shouldn't really matter as security for most sheds isn't great, however if you position the shed against a wall(brick) you can then bolt a bracket to the wall using wall bolts, the bracket obviously must pass through into the shed and then use shackle locks to secure your beloveds, so even though they are in the shed they are secured properly to the wall, a series of shackle locks connected to each other will allow you to secure several items at once, having the shed next to the wall will also allow you to discreetly send a power cable into the shed for an alarm and a light, try argos for metal sheds you should be able to find a way to lock the door more securely.
it's all about compromises, it's a well known fact that kitchens and bathrooms sell houses, mainly to women, blokes look at garages, women don't care much for garages. sounds like you're doing all the compromising and are clearly buying the wrong house... my advice, keep looking.
if you've got rear access (fnar fnar) then rethink the level of security as much easier for thieves to get to, if its vunerable consider a mini block built shed (consult local brickie) and/or no windows
a shed will still require a concrete base (think about a ground anchor in the base)
go for the biggest she'll let you (it'll still end up too small)
consider mains and a stove
then think about a little shed for the lawn mower etc
😆
as far as security went with mine I had lots of locks hanging round tangled the bikes together and the asked M&S what I would need to have 5 expensive bikes covered in the shed - answer was a padlock on the door put my mind at rest - yes it would be hassle to get things replaced but easier than building fort knox in the garden.
Got a B&Q shed that was part of a modular range (You got the front & back then decided how much middle you wanted) best thing was the doors were on the long side so much easier to get in and out. Ended up hanging bikes and keeping loads of stuff under them

Front access, and door is 7' and has a dead lock so should be pretty safe, plus my bikes arent worth too much 9at the moment!)
There is no need for a lawnmower - going to use astroturf in the future
Hoping to avoid concrete base at this stage to try and get it sorted quickly, but bolting through to the wall behind sounds a good idea

we Looked at loads at diy stores, garden centres and specialist timber building places, and tiger shedsoffered great value. Delivered as a kit which took a total of approx 4 hours to erect singlehanded. You'll need some extra locks/ gasps etc for piece of mind and maybe grilles or bars for the windows, but I bubble wrappedthewindow too as it deters prying eyes but let's light in. Highly recomend them
If you level the ground you can get away with laying slabs under the bearers.
I just got an Asgard Access - £450 steel bike shed, very easy to assemble.
I have my three bikes fully assembled in it, and my wife's bike at the back with the bars turned round. It seems very secure, and can be drilled into the slab base.

What sizes are people getting?
I used to have one of these. Very well made too. In fact I sold it to a STW'er, he may come along and add his thoughts!

having the shed next to the wall will also allow you to discreetly send a power cable into the shed
try argos for metal sheds
Connect your metal shed up to the mains, that will make it nice and secure!
can have up to 30 Sqm without planning permission with a metre clearance from your perimeter fence, make your man cave as big as possible, its not just for storage but like an extension of the house :o...you know you want to!
