first time out in ages and my bike objects to being overladen and insults me at the same time by snapping it's seatpost on a slight descent.

What seatpost for moderate xc and back country use? and is 9 years a long time to expect a seatpost to last?

I've had seatposts last longer but they are generally the heavy duty jobs, what failed, a bolt or the actual post?

I've got a cheapo ritchey one on my bike and it's lasting really well, not a single creak from it in over a year.

Similar thing happened to me. Old bike had been parked in the loft for a couple of years. Started renovating, nearly finished and went for a pedal down the street. Seat felt lose and on examination found post to be split โ— Seat posts tend to last 2-3yrs with me. Have a Racface which may be around 5yrs old.

Can I say Thomson yet? Mine take my weight (16+st) quite happily and I've had one about 5 years.

Apart from creaking a bit ( a spot of cleaning and regreasing the bolts) Thompson posts have put up with my lardy butt for many years without fail. Previously used to break posts, but happy with these on my bikes.

It was a USE alien, and snapped like a dry stick without warning,(It or my saddle had creaked since day one)but had lots of comfy flex in them.
the little skinny M2 bolts that hold the clamp together are fine.

I think the protracted length sticking out of the short seat tube design of the inbred, combined with a hundred kilos of rider and gear on a three day offroad expedition kind of finished off the lightweight racing design.
