Been doing this for years and just about to service the road bike and was thinking about what I need to do. Read some old archive threads and some interesting tips on methods and oils/lubes/cleaning products used. Would be interesting some more and to hear other peoples' take on this and any useful tips.
Cheers

I don't really ever 'service' a bike as such, just maintain it or sort things that don't work correctly. Clean and lube chain after every 2 rides etc

cheers, trying to get an idea of what lubes/oils cleaning products people use.
Do you use any particular brands - what works best?

As above, don't really 'service' but do a lot of post-ride inspection then replace if needed.

Cleaning regime:
Dirty ride โžก

Complete wash including chain/cassette etc
Re-lube chain
Silicon spray on forks/rear shock
Seatpost out - clean - back in
GT85 frame/drivechain

Clean ride โžก

De-dust, check chain for dust/grit and clean if necessary.
Wipe down fork stantions
Silicon spray on forks/rear shock

As for lubes etc:
Watered down de-greaser for washing
GT85 for general de-watering after washing
Pro-line chain lube
Fenwicks silicon suspension spray
Carbon assembly paste for seatpost.
Muc-off disc brake cleaner

The de-greaser is basically Muc-Off but we use a similar product by the bucket load at work so I borrow the odd 5 litre bottle ๐Ÿ˜‰
Chain lube is ProGold ProLink
Been using it for years. Tried different ones but nothing comes close IMO

As above; i only really "service" stuff when it starts to complain.

Degreaser - fairy liquid in hot water.
Lubricant - light machine oil.

Headset - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.
Bottom Bracket - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.
Freewheel - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.
Hubs - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.

See the pattern? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oil chain. Ride. Put in garage.

If it's really muddy... oil chain. Ride. Hose. Oil chain. Put in garage.

Replace bits when they stop working.

cheers everyone
pro gold lube - never used but heard good things about it.
I'm currently using muc-off C3 lube which is great particularly in wet weather but really gets the bike and components dirty... thinking about a change

Headset - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.
Bottom Bracket - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.
Freewheel - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.
Hubs - Strip, clean, oil, reassemble.

Duffer - what oils are you using here?

I'll ask the token rigid SS question. Service? ๐Ÿ™‚

Whatever i've got lying around...

*nips out to the shed*

Currently a little bottle of "Weldtite Cycle Oil". I've had the bottle for about 5 years, which should give you some indication of how often it gets used! I don't think it matters too much.

(also a Singlespeeder, by the way!)

Drivetrain and fork/shock stanchions is pretty much all I focus on after a ride (or more likely just before the start of the next ride)...which pretty much amounts to oil chain and clean stanchions plus spray with Fork Juice.

After ever ride, fork and shock stanchions get wiped and treated with finish line stanchion lube (not available in the uk).

If it's dirty, hot water and fairy liquid. If the drive is dirty, cleaned with a couple of baby wipes and topped up with squirt lube. If it's really manky/winter, cleaned with jizer then dipped in silkolene hot wax.

I listen carefully to my bike so I don't "service" it as such, just sort stuff as and when. Typically grease of choice is silkolene rg2.

Shocks I use float fluid in the rear, maxima for the open bath fork damper and motorcycle engine oil for the spring leg, maybe a bit of float fluid on top of the air spring. Fork service is only once or twice a year. Brake fluid flush is once a year just before riding holiday.
