Right going to try ghetto tubeless this weekend on my 719D rims.
I have a very good Nobby Nic and Racing Ralph combo in the garage that ran with tubes last year. Both have the SnakeSkin sidewall BTW
Question is do i try these, as they are, with some stans, or are they that weak in the sidewalls that I am better off selling the std ones and buying some UST versions from Merlin instead.
Opinions and more importantly experience on both tyre types and UST or not mucho welcome.
Ta
in advance
Dave
I run the UST versions, (rr r/nn f) and have never had a problem, but its more rooty and muddy where i ride, as opposed to rocky, where ive heard they struggle for sidewall strength. I think it depends what you are running them on, and how/where you ride them?
Never had any problems with the UST Nobby Nics despite ploughing through rocks at speed. I suspect that if you just want to run your existing snakeskin sidewall versions with a tubless kit, you'll have no more problems than you had with tubes, if any?
Have used both snake skin versions with Stans, no problem at all...
Unfortunately I've ripped them all UST and non in Peaks/Wales/Lakes , and sometimes on rocks no bigger than a pebble . They are great tyres for traction and rolling but risky IMHO as I have a garage full. I do however still use them on 2 bikes as I like taking risks 😉
Going tubeless doesn't make the sidewalls weaker* - if they work for you with tubes they'll work tubeless.
* the reason for that perception being that once you've got rid of all other forms of punctures you're only left with ripped sidewalls, hence giving the impression that tubeless is particularly prone to this.
Dave,
As long as you are riding rooty and muddy should be fine but go anywhere rocky and prepare to walk home. Fire up an ad for some Mud X you will not regret it.
Fancy some forks? **** my aching wrists!!!!!
I'm not sure Brant had the idea of putting rigid carbon forks on a ti456 when he designed it.
It may be hard on the wrists but i bet it's bloody fast.
the fact that the lakes and peaks are part of my usual riding is not filling me with confidence.
I'm on swampthings at the moment and they are great.
Sure enough it is an absolute rocket ship and the fact that Brant himself told me the forks would be perfect for it but it looks like I am now on the outlook for some 426 revs.
**** one ride over Ladybower would shred NN's - swampthings are the ticket if you don't mind the riding through treacle feeling.
My SnakeSKin Nobby Nics have been great, can't same the same about the normal ones which I killed in 1 very expensive ride, or are people killing the Snakeskin ones as well?
Very tempted by some Snakeskin Ralphs to make the enduros a bit easier this year, however they are seriously expensive.
Merlin have em at £30 Richc. In fact the UST NN and RR are the same price as the std if you buy a pair
