[Closed] How many miles do you get from your commuter bike tyres?

Just done over 1000 miles on my Boardman CX Comp (from new) and the rear tyre is now pretty worn to the point it will need replacing soon. It is mostly used on tarmac. The tread has almost worn right down in the centre. It isn't ridden particularly hard and don't skid etc but thought I would get a bit better out of it.

The tyres are Scwalbe Tyrago with Kevlar Guard.

So what tyres to replace it with? I don't want a pure road tyre as there are a few bridleways that are good on the way into work (especially now they have dried out) and Kevlar is useful due to the amount of glass and thorns on the Derby riverside path!

2000-3000 miles out of the rear and double that from the front - Schwalbe Pro Ones and/or Hutchinson Sectors.  £120 a year....pretty similar usage/cost to premium 18" tyres on my car which kinda sucks.

The usual answer to the "what commuting tyre" question is Schwalbe Marathon Plus. The one on my front wheel is on its second bike! It's done at least 10,000km of road and canal tow path and still has the little mould hairs.

The downside? They are so heavy they are guaranteed to deaden the feel of any bike 🙁

if you're using a tredded tyre mostly on the road, 1000 miles is probably the best you're going to get from it .

I can live with the low mileage I guess - cant really make up my mind to go to road type tyre and get speed benefits but not have the opportunity to do the bridleways etc. Still I could switch to road tyres and then get a gravel bike to solve the problem (n+1)!

I have a set of these for my mixed commute.

They are fairly nippy on road, and fine to ride on towpath-like trails. They I put them on at the beginning of last summer, and they've probably done 700 miles or so and still look fine.

Another Schwalbe Marathon Plus user here, just swapped mine after about 7000Km. Could have lasted further but I'm going to put them on another bike. My commute is a mix of on and off road. No punctures.

I use Schwalbe Marathon Touring greenguard, a bit lighter and springier than the plus version with a reasonable amount of puncture protection.

Rear starts showing as worn after approx 1500 miles but I fit a new one around November time when it starts getting icy and run it until the next November for 2,500 miles figuring I don’t need so much grip on the rear.

Run one on the front that has done >6,000 miles and still not worn down much 🙂

I've just got rid of my Marathon Plus as they weighed a ton and were horrible. I have Durano Race Gaurd now, much lighter and faster, and (touch wood) apparently fairly puncture resistant. I might suffer the Marathons again over the winter.

Marathon Plus might be quite good actually. They look like they would work OK on hardpack which is what the bridleways are if I go down them (I don't use them in the wet).

Will have to decide what width to go with as well. Will prob look at 35.

Schwalbe G-One Speed or G-One Allround are good. I run them tubeless, so punctures are very rare.

Marathon Plus +1. A quick search of my emails shows mine have been fitted since March 2014, that's in the region of 10-11k miles. No punctures. Rear is worn smooth. Front still has tread. Brilliant no-fuss commuter tyres.

EDIT: should say, that's on a steel tourer with panniers and I'm not exactly a lightweight.

Cant do tubeless as the rims aren't designed for tubeless (I assume anyway - should prob check though!)

I put roughly 4,000 miles on my second hand Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres before I changed bikes. There was still life left in them. That was Cycle lanes (if you can call them that) and roads in flat Essex. Never had a puncture either! That's what really impressed me.

I change my brompton tyres about every 5000 miles (2 years), the fronts are usually still pretty good but the back will have lost a lot of tread and be quite cut up, and I change them before I start getting punctures because punctures on a brompton are time consuming and annoying. My last set were Schwalbe Marathon Plus but this time I've gone for Marathon Greenguard as they're ultimately not as puncture resistant, but about 150g lighter per tyre and don't feel like blocks of wood.

Ah, if you don't definitely want off-road tyres then my original answer stands. Continental Sport Contact with the Safety System. They bomb along brilliant, last at least 4000 miles on the back and the last set I had had no patches on the original tubes when I changed them.

I got some Schwalbe puncture proof tyres on a second hand bike. they were supposedly a faster tread, but still lumpen horrors by comparison.

You can get non-tubeless versions. Reason I like the G-ones is because they don't feel like off-road tyres on the road, but they're tready (if thats a word) enough for a bit of bridleway use.

Probably over 10k miles on my set of marathon plus tyres now. Still looking in surprisingly good shape. Nearly all road miles but i'll do light off road on them OK, they grip OK on hardpack/gravel but I mainly do that when it's dry - i've done about 2 miles off road from the 11 mile commute each way the last few days

Main problem is they're heavy and dead feeling

The Marathon supremes I'm running are not anything like as draggy as some of the marathons, and I've had them on for about 3000+ miles now at a guess, with no need for replacement on either yet.

Got about 1500-2000 out of GP4000SII on the back.

The marathon supremes would be OKish on rough stuff, but they're not as heavily treaded as some touring tyres (like the classic Marathons for example).

I guess one thing I'd ask is do you *really* not skid? Even the odd lock up from sudden/heavy braking can make a big difference to the life of the tyre.

I prob have skidded a couple of times when pedestrians step out on you (riding through the centre of Derby is a bit risky for pedestrians they tend to just cross the road without looking!). But it isn’t a habit and I wouldn’t have thought it would make a huge difference.

Marathons will probably wear a groove in the road before they wear out. I can't remember which variant I bought last, but I agree they are very agricultural. For reliable commuting, however, they are the business, and they easily cope with rough tracks.

I am currently running the G-One Speed tubeless tyres on my commuter. I wasn't planning to use tubeless tyres, but Hunt kindly gave me a free set after there was a very long delay in delivering some wheels I bought. They definitely run a lot faster than the Marathons, are fine on off road tracks, and I have not experienced any punctures yet, but I have only used them for a month or so, so I can't comment on how durable they are long term.

I've got the higher TPI version of Surly's Knard in 41c flavour on my Straggler.

They've done about 2,000 miles mainly on tarmac commutes, with no significant wear or punctures (yet). Surprised me.

Maraton Plusses are bombproof and last forever, but yeah, heavy and dead feeling. But you're going to work. It's not a race. It doesn't matter.

I've got some Marathon Mondials on the Tour de Fer now, they've done nearly 1900 miles and look totally unworn. I'm expecting 10k out of them to be fair. FYI they're the slightly more 'knobbly' version of the Marathon Supreme, and they're easily the best all round 700c tyre I've ever used. Pricy, but the value comes from the longevity, not the price.

If you've got the same wheels as my Boardman CX (some Mavic, non tubeless) then they work just fine tubeless. I had Schwalbe G-one, and now on a Bontrager CX-1.

Garmin tracks it for me. As it was a new bike when I do a ride I select which bike I am using and that keeps track for me. This will prob be the only time I actually know as I doubt I will note when I replace them and what the mileage was.

Will look if I can do a tubless conversion but at the moment the Schwalbe Marathon Greenguard look like the best option in 32c.

Don't you record each ride on a spreadsheet, with details about what is replaced and when? How odd!
